1) The document outlines 7 problems related to determining natural frequencies and equivalent stiffnesses of various spring-mass systems and structural frames. Problems 1-5 involve calculating properties of single-degree-of-freedom spring-mass systems, while problems 6-7 analyze planar structural frame models.

CE5620: Structural Dynamics

Jul-Nov 2018
Assignment 1 (Due Date: 10/8/2018)

1. A mass (m) is suspended from a spring system as shown in Figure below.

Determine natural frequency of the system. Also, derive an expression for
equivalent stiffness of the system.

2. A mass (m) is suspended through a system of three springs k1, k2 and k3 as

shown in Figure below. The spring k3 is attached to a rigid mass less bar A
at its mid span. Determine the equivalent stiffness of the system and its
natural frequency.

3. Write the equation governing free vibration of the system shown in Figure
below,
(a)beam is mass less and it carries a weight (W=mg) at its free end, and
(b)beam has a total mass m.

4. A spring and mass system is shown in Figure below. Determine the effect
of gravity on the natural frequency and equation of motion.

5. A spring and mass system is shown in Figure below. Assume that the
rotation is small so that the spring deflects horizontally and ignore mass of
the road. Determine the frequency of vibration.

6. A 3.5 m high, 6 m wide single-bay single-story frame is rigidly jointed with a

beam of mass 8000 kg and columns of negligible mass and rigidity of EIc
=5000kNm2. Calculate the natural frequency and period. Find the force
required to deflect the frame 20 mm laterally.

7. A frame is shown in Figure below. Assume that the columns are massless,
entire mass of the frame is lumped at the roof level, neglect damping and
axial deformation. Determine equation of motion of the frame.
