excess of 450mm centers in both directions on the top and sides, and 300mm centers in both directions on
bottom of the insulated surfaces. The pin length shall be 25mm greater than the thickness of insulation.
After the insulation and speed washers are in place the pins shall be bent over and not cut.

Joints in insulation shall be tightly butted so as to produce a monolithic continuous insulation. Edges of
metal mesh covered blankets shall be tied together with wire.

Road mesh may be used to span stiffeners for surfaces that are to be insulated with metal mesh reinforced
mineral wool blankets.

Mineral wool block or board insulation shall be installed employing either of the following methods:
a) Mineral wool insulation shall be applied directly against hot surfaces or surfaces with an intermediate
layer of insulation. When the cool side of the insulation is not in contact with the outer metal lagging,
the insulation shall be covered with an acceptable metal mesh. Metal mesh facing must be suitably
lapped and tied together.
b) Mineral wool insulation shall be of sandwich construction, i.e., confined between inner and outer
metal sheets.

Road mesh, where used to span stiffener members, shall be a minimum of 100mm x 100mm x 4/6mm for
horizontal surfaces, which may be walked upon, and 150mm x 150mm x 6/5mm for other surfaces. Road
mesh shall be tack welded to stiffeners or supports on not greater than 600mm centers both ways.
Insulation block and blankets shall be fastened to the road mesh with tie wires or pins and speed washers
respectively, in such manner as to ensure firm attachment of the insulation to all surfaces.

Wherever sandwich type insulation construction is used (or where tubes or pipes are insulated as a group),
suitable barriers of plate and block or plastic insulation shall be installed in vertical runs on approximately
3m intervals to eliminate any stack effect.

Joints and finish:

All spaces of joints between mineral fiber segmental, sectional or block forms of insulation shall be filled
with insulating cement. In mixing insulating or covering compounds no salt or brackish water shall be
used.

1.1.4.7 PERSONNEL PROTECTION

In addition to the insulation specified above personnel protection insulation shall be provided for the
following whenever these items are within 2 meters from a gallery or other walking area:

a) All trapped and untrapped drain piping that operates at a temperature of 70oC and above.
b) Safety valve vents piping, relief valve vent piping, equipment vents etc. that operate at a temperature
of 70oC and above.

Drains and vents with a working temperature above 70oC shall be insulated with 25mm minimum
thickness of insulation, applied, attached and finished as specified for other associated piping.

Iron and steel steam trap bodies shall not be insulated, but shall be provided with personnel protection
shields. The shield shall be fabricated from minimum 1.3mm thick expanded galvanized steel. All sharp
edges must be folded back on the material. Shields shall be of the removable type, employing screws and
nuts for servicing of the steam traps. The Bidder shall submit typical sketches to the Purchaser for review
prior to installation.

1.1.4.8 FLASHING
The Bidder shall provide hot-dip galvanized steel flashing as hereinafter specified.

1.3mm thick flashing shall be provided where insulated or uninsulated ductwork enters or exists a building
wall.

The Bidder shall submit a sketch to the Purchaser showing the flashing details for penetrations through
siding walls.

1.1.4.9 LAGGING
All insulated surfaces of straight pipe, fittings, valves, flanges, equipment etc. shall be lagged with half-
hard aluminum sheet, stucco embossed, with a factory attached moisture barrier of 18kg Kraft paper coated
with 25.4micron thickness of polyethylene. Type of material would be Marine Grade Aluminum .The
thickness of aluminum sheet shall not be less than 24SWG for pipes with O.D. ≤ 450 and 22SWG for pipes
with OD > 450 and flat surface of equipment. The use of asphaltic type moisture barrier will not be
permitted. The above shall not apply to cold equipment.

Insulation with factory attached metal lagging will not be acceptable except where specified otherwise.

Metal lagging shall be properly designed and installed so as to completely cover all insulation and to
provide for expansion and contraction so the lagging shall lay flat and straight with the equipment hot or
cold.

For outdoor applications, the metal lagging shall be completely waterproof with proper flashings installed
so that water cannot reach the insulation. The lagging shall be designed and installed to provide for
complete water runoff with no pockets where water can collect.

Removable panels of doors shall be provided in the metal lagging to provide for removal of hand hole
closure fittings, manholes etc.

The method of fastening metal lagging shall be acceptable to the Purchaser. The spacing of fasteners shall
be in a set pattern both vertically and horizontally and shall be such as to prevent ratting of the lagging due
of effect of equipment or piping vibration.

Dissimilar metal that may cause galvanic corrosion shall be properly isolated.

Metal lagging fastening screws shall be cadmium-plated or stainless steel for the aluminum aluminized
sheeting or galvanized sheeting. Nylon, neoprene or vinyl washers shall be used. All fastening screws shall
be of the type that will not stain the lagging. Full-threaded stud setlock fastener and blind rivets are not
acceptable methods of fastening lagging.

The alloy temper shall be such that the material can be bent flat on itself without cracking.

1.1.4.10 CANVAS JACKETING

The use of canvas jacketing for insulation is not permitted.

1.1.4.11 INSULATION SAMPLES

A sample of each type of pipe and equipment insulation, together with thermal efficiency tables or curves
based on a recognized authority, shall be submitted to the Purchaser for information.
