Self Assessment Part C - Written Reflection
Part 1: What did you learn about yourself? What did you confirm about yourself that you
already knew? Which results did you disagree with and why? Refer to specific quizzes to
support your answer.
In the test regarding the values of work skills, I was scored incredibly low for autonomy.
Autonomy is a characteristic of how we interpret different events and actions and then how we react to it.
It is reflective upon our morals and values. Autonomy is a representation of how one takes decisions
willingly and not pressured by external forces. The idea of autonomy, was introduced by Fritz Heider and
Richard DeCharms. The idea of autonomy is comprised of ideas such as self-causation. There are two
types of personal causation in which it can happen intentionally or unintentionally. The self-determination
theory is connected to this because it highlights how some actions are done automatically due to the
determination to strive in that area and this reflects on one’s morals and values. In other cases, some
actions will only happen with motivation. I believe I scored poorly for the skill of autonomy because I
don’t put my full effort in the objectives presented. A piece of evidence to support this is that projects and
essays that are regarding school, I believe I put my full effort in and this happens autonomously. It
reflects my morals and values of wanting to succeed to in school and to put emphasis on the quality of
work I present. I believe this action is autonomous because going to school is something I enjoy because I
get to to learn. I enjoy school because of the diversity it includes and how teachers support students and
encourage us to fail. Diversity is crucial within societies as it is one of the greatest way to eradicate the
stereotypes and misconceptions that we have over people that are different in colour, gender, race or
religion. The misconceptions that we have over one another is the fuel for discrimination. As a society,
when we discriminate, as a whole we are getting rid of a particular group of people who can provide
innovative solutions that are sustainable and benefit the economy, environment and our society. In the
test, regarding the work values, another skill I scored low is self-development. Self-development is
essential because it allows you to change in small incremental steps. Self-development is key because it
allows you to become a better person. A contributing factor to self-development is grit. The concept of
grit is when one is committed to something and they are constantly improving themselves and putting
themselves in a proper mindset that allows them to be resilient and to always put their full effort in. The
concept of grit is applicable to me in certain cases. Angela Lee Duckworth, a psychologist who developed
the concept of grit, states how you can develop or improve one’s grit through four steps: Developing a
fascination, Daily improvement, the Greater purpose and Growth mindset. I believe that as a person I am
able to develop a fascination for something. I believe this because although everything has repercussions
that can be impactful on many levels, there is always going to something that one can hope for or enjoy.
A piece of evidence to support this is when we started the Ecology Unit. I developed a fascination for this
unit because I found out how an ecosystem is like a machine and how the biotic and abiotic features such
as the animals and the rivers are similar to the gears because if one part is lost or cannot be used the whole
machine can be affected. I also found this unit fascinating because I was able to apply it to the world
around me, which allowed me to reinforce that learning. I was bale to improve daily by studying and
understanding the definitions and concepts presented. I found the greater purpose as being able to apply
the concepts that I learned to the world around me. I developed a growth mindset because the constant
fascination for this unit motivated me to do well on the upcoming quizzes and tests, regarding this unit.
Although, I believe that there is something to hope for or enjoy in everything, I am not always
able to apply that to everything I learn. A piece of evidence to support this is when we were learning the
Space Unit. The Space Unit, I found difficult because of the concepts that came along. I found it very
difficult because it was hard to apply the concepts that I learned to real life scenarios, which made it hard
to reinforce the learning. I believe I was in the wrong track in the beginning of not being optimistic about
this unit. In contrast, to when I was learning the Ecology Unit, studying the concepts and definitions was
autonomous, but studying the concepts and definitions regarding Space, required motivation because of
the lack of fascination.
Through the test, that was regarding one's work abilities I was able to confirm that I was
detail-oriented. The test regarding our abilities allowed me to confirm this through the jobs that were
suggested as they were all concerned within the fields of Science, Mathematics, Engineering and
Technology. In many cases, being detail-oriented is important because finding the solution to a problem
would be amidst in the details. Being detail-oriented allows one to be aware of their surroundings. As one
is detail-oriented, it allows them cultivate amiable relationships with their colleagues and to develop
and/or improve their interpersonal skills. In the 21st century, a recognizable skill is the ability for one to
collaborate in a productive way and to embrace the differences that are seen. Being detail oriented is
correlated with cultivating virtuous relationships because it allows one to be aware of the mindset and the
emotions of the person. By knowing their mindset, it allows one to be able to incorporate their knowledge
and expertise in an effective manner.
The results that I would disagree with, is in the test that scores our work abilities is for scoring
very high on prestige. I believe that prestige is one of the earliest problems in our society, as it it
contributes to the prejudice. A piece of evidence to support this statement is the Syrian Refugee Crisis.
The Syrian Refugee Crisis started due to the Syrian Civil War that started in 2011. Prejudice is correlated
towards the Syrian Refugee Crisis because of the misconceptions that one could have had against the
Syrian refugees. A misconception against Syrian refugees are that they are welfare dependent and will not
help contribute to the economy. However, according to the Global Ministries, 49% of the Syrian men
work in occupations that are highly skilled such as business and science. I disagree with the test of scoring
me high for prestige because I believe that in order to earn prestige, if one obtains a particular job or does
an objective presented before them. It will not sustain as it was done with an intention, that will not
benefit anyone. As one find the greater purpose for something, they allow themselves to improve and
motivate them to take the steps to steve within that sector.
Part 2: What recurring patterns did you see throughout the Who Am I? unit (i.e. things about
yourself or suggested occupations)? From the suggested occupations, which would you
consider?
The recurring patterns I see throughout the Who Am I? Unit, is that I should get an occupation
that is involved in the sector of Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology. I believe I can find
my flow in these particular sectors because I am able to excel in the activities that are comprised within
the jobs. An example is the occupation of a chemist. The job of a forensic chemist is comprised of jobs
such as writing reports of the evidence that has been found, being able to explain the scientific procedures
and the evidence presented in a way that allows the jury and the judge to understand and following a
procedure and framework of how the equipment is supposed to be used and how the process is carried
out. I believe that in these activities I can excel in because I am able to focus and concentrate on the
object that is presented. It allows me to carry out the task in an efficient and effective manner, it also
allows me to prioritize too. A pieces of evidence to support this is Shonda Rhimes. Shonda Rhimes has
written and produced several successful television shows such as Gray’s Anatomy. She talks about how
she found her flow through writing as it allows her to flourish and break boundaries that were never
expected. A contributing factor to her being able to flourish is how she is surrounded by people who
accept her talent and motivate her, as she is able to provide jobs that never existed before. A piece of
evidence to how she states her flow is “The hum is a drug, the hum is music, the hum is God’s whisper
right in my ear.”
Another pattern, I see within the Who Am I? Unit is that the jobs that have been provided all
encourage failures and for their employees to make mistakes. I believe that in a career that allows me to
fail would be very interesting because it makes it a very innovative and creative workplace. It allows for
good discussions to flow and for people to feel inspired. Workplaces that encourage failures, motivate
their employees to treat their failures as milestones and not defeat because that piece of failures is not
permanent but temporary. By taking the proper steps, one can find the solution to the problem. Failures
that are treated as milestones, encourage people to improve and put their full effort forward in order to see
results that will russian over a period of time.
From the careers that have been suggested, I would choose the occupation of a chemist and the
job of a forensic chemist. I believe that a forensic chemist is the most suitable because it is a combination
of activities and skill that I enjoy and possess such as writing reports and being detail oriented. I would
enjoy being a forensic chemist because I get to recreate the story of what happened, by using the evidence
that is provided. Using the reports and evidence that are provided in court will be used to determine if the
person is guilty or innocent. As a forensic scientist, one gets to apply the knowledge from various subjects
such as chemistry and biology, and use those principles to be able to help solve the crime. The skills that I
possess such as being detail-oriented and having critical thinking skills, also will help me be successful
within the job.
Part 3: Name and describe at least one career that was suggested that you would never have
considered before. What appeals to you about this career and why? Based on everything we've
learned to date, which pathway(s) (University, College, Workplace, Apprenticeship) are you
currently considering and why?
A career that was suggested was a veterinarian. I have never considered a veterinarian because I
don’t usually enjoy animals. I will observe animals at places such as zoos, but as a career I will not. I
believe this because animals immediately react, humans are the only creatures that can think and then
react. Due an animal’s irrational behaviour, one will never really know how it will react under different
conditions. Similar to relationships with humans, it is hard to forget the relationships that are developed
for an animal. The relationships with animals are extremely gratifying because of the love and
compassion they show without any expectations. As animals, we have used them in many for therapy,
mental health and for the disabled because of their ability to help us feel content. I believe that due to the
reason, of how special and important the relationship between an animal can be I don’t want to do it
because of the pain it could cause if the relationship is destroyed in some way.
A career that was suggested was a drafting technician. I was surprised to have a drafting
technician because I am not good at art. I don’t like art because of the many variables that it is comprised
of and how it can be very abstract. It can be very difficult to understand the piece of art due to the pieces
of art being open-minded and reflecting on experiences from the painter. Another duty that is comprised
for a drafting technician is supervising other technicians, I don’t like this part of the job because I usually
am very critical of my work. For the fear of failure or making mistakes, I would definitely not definately
not distribute the work equally among the members of my team.
As a pathway for my education I would want to go to the University of Toronto. I want to got to
the University of Toronto because of their excellent program for forensic science. I want to go to the
University because it is one of the ways society has defined someone being smart or better than other
candidate in an interview. However, I want to go University because you are learning knowledge from
experts in that particular field. It is evidence that in many cases the professor that is teaching could have
wrote the textbook that one studies from. I believe University will also compensate for the gender-based
pay that is prevalent within society. It can be seen that in society there is gender-based pay. A piece of
evidence to support this is that for every one dollar a man makes a woman makes approximately 80 cents.
Gender-based pay is can be based off from many reasons such as the concern of how a women can both
raise a family and be successful within her career. Many companies take it as an indication that the
women is not putting her efforts within the career. Gender-based pay can be also based off from
stereotypes. A piece of evidence is that in 2015, in Alberta men held 88% of the jobs that regarded to
constructions and 76% of the men held in factors that extract substances such as oil and gas. I want to go
to University because if gender-based pay is still a prevalent issue, when I get my job, I want to make sure
that I am able to get my money that is worth for my full potential.
