1. In a typical layered network structure, between which two layers is the boundary
for hop-to-hop communication and end-to-end communication? According to this
separation, which layer is responsible for routing, and which layer is for verifying
final receiver acknowledgement? (Make a guess)

2. What is the most prominent advantage of connectionless networks over


connection-oriented networks? (This also explains the initial intention of
introducing connectionless networks to replace connection-oriented networks for
some applications.)

3. Based on the advantages and disadvantages of connectionless networks, what


kinds of applications are most suitable to run on these connectionless networks,
and what kinds of applications are least suitable to run on them?

4. What could be the major problem of the 1-persistent CSMA scheme in Ethernet?
Why?

5. Download Wireshark from http://www.wireshark.org/download.html, install it on


your computer. Read the User’s Manual and try to use the software. It works
when you are connected to a network. It is a popular protocol analyzer. Show you
have done this by capturing a few screen shots while the software is running.
