Quantitative Research Design

This document discusses quantitative research design and the different types of study designs: (1) Descriptive designs observe subjects in their natural environment to describe a variable's current status. (2) Experimental designs study cause-and-effect by controlling all variables except the one being manipulated. (3) Quasi-experimental designs aim to establish relationships but do not randomly assign groups or manipulate variables. Results are compared between experimental and control groups. (4) Correlational designs examine relationships between variables but do not determine cause and effect. Quantitative analysis converts data to numerical form for statistical analysis to describe and explain observed phenomena.

Quantitative research design

Study designs

A study design refers to the overall strategy that a researcher chooses to integrate the different
components of the study to ensure one effectively addresses the research problem.

Types of study designs in quantitative study designs

In quantitative research there are four main types of research designs, namely: descriptive design,
correlational design, Quasi experimental design and experimental designs

(a) Descriptive non experimental

A researcher seeks to describe the currently status of a variable. It describes what exists. It is used
to obtain information concerning the current status of a phenomenon. The subjects are observed in
a completely natural and unchanged environment.

(b) Experimental designs

It is a design which is used to study cause - effect relationship among a group of variables in a
research study. The researcher controls the variables except the variable being manipulated.

These study allows the researcher be able to control the situation. It permits the researcher to
identify cause and effect relationship. It provides the highest level of evidence for single study
designs.

(c) A quasi -experimental design:

This design aims to establish cause effect relationship between two or more variables. The groups
are not assigned and does not manipulate the independent variable. Study group results are
compared with control group results.

In this design there is experimental and control group are present but randomization is not there.

(d) Correlational study design

This examines if variables relate to each other. It quantifies the strength or relationship between the
variables not cause and effect relationship.
Quantitative analysis

This is use of techniques to convert data to numerical forms and subject them to statistical analysis
to ensure the data makes sense.

After the analysis the researcher should be able to do a numerical representation and manipulation
of observations for the purposes of describing and explaining the phenomena and that those
observation reflect.

It involves editing, coding and data entry and transforming of data to a new format that to be able to
explain the phenomenon.

In univariate data the measures of central tendence to analyse data: ie, mean, mode, and median.
