EMAT

The document discusses selecting suitable materials for a scissor. It first outlines objectives for the scissor such as comfort, light weight, durability and sharpness. Potential materials are then screened and stainless steel and rubber are selected for the blades and grip, respectively. The conclusion states that researching and selecting the most suitable materials for a product's intended use is important for engineering design.

THE SCISSOR

ABSTRACT
The role of materials in the engineering design process is vital. Choice of an appropriate material
for a particular product is one of the most important and most responsible tasks of engineers. In
order to create a successful and safe product, the designing engineers have to have a clear
knowledge about most materials. There are large number of materials with diverse properties
available to the designers to satisfy different design requirements. Due to the large number of
different materials in the environment, selecting a suitable material for certain product is somewhat
difficult. In order to select the suitable material, certain process has to be followed. In this report
an example of material selection is presented.

INTRODUCTION

Scissor is a cutting instrument made with pair of metal blades connected each other. End
of the non-sharp end there is a handler to hold the scissor. The cutting material should be placed
between these two blades. Scissors have blades with different size no more than 30cm no less
than 10cm. There are two hole which is used to put a thumb in to a one hole and the other hole is
used to put two fingers.

Scissors and shears exist in a wide variety of forms depending on their intended uses. Children's
scissors, used only on paper, have dull blades to ensure safety. Scissors used to cut hair or fabric
must be much sharper. The largest shears are used to cut metal or to trim shrubs and must have
very strong blades.

There are few kinds of scissors such as fabric scissors which are used to cut clothes and nail
scissors which are used to cut finger nails and toenails. The earliest scissors known to exist
appeared in the Middle East about 3,000 or 4,000 years ago. They were made with two cupper
blades. Those are used to cut the skin of the animals.
OBJECTIVES

 Comfort for the user.

 Amount of weight
 Pleasant looking
 Durability
 Sharpness

Comfort for the user

The handle should be designed curved and the material should be more comfortable to the hand.
Amount of weight
The blades should be light in weight and the handlers too.
Pleasant looking
The scissor should be designed so that its look pleases the human eye. The look of a product is a
major selling factor in designing. The scissor should have both looks and the strength.
Durability

The scissor should last a considerable amount of time with continuous use.

Sharpness

The blades should be more sharp so that materials can be easily cut.

CONSTRAINTS
 Cannot withstand pressure over 100 psi
 Cannot withstand high temperatures above a specified level.
SCREENING

The product was divided into two main parts;

1. Scissor Grip (Handler)

2. Blades.

SCISSOR GRIP MATERIALS

Poly isoprene rubber

BLADE MATERIAL

Stainless steel
CONCLUSION
This was a very good experience for us as we all going to be engineers in the near future. Selecting
the most suitable material for a particular product should be done by doing more researches. With
the help of the software we got some materials which are suitable for the scissor. I think our attempt
is a successful one because we hope that we selected the most suitable material for the scissor.
