Direct Injection Diesel

Engine Development
IFP Integrated Offer
Diesel engines design at IFP is supported by powerful simulation and
modelling tools (0D to 3D, including KIVA-MB), which have made our
reputation in the competitive world of Formula One engines design.
From cylinderhead to turbocharging, from injection to aftertreatment and
EMS calibration, IFP's methodology, with a unique combined expertise
in engines and fuels, offers time saving and reliable results. A long term
development programme, recently completed, enables IFP to provide a
combination of design criteria/testing tools for each step of the engine
design process.

CYLINDERHEAD

Architecture, Robustness, Efficiency.

These key factors are leading the process of
cylinderhead development. The fastest way to
get the right design is to combine an intensive
use of modelling with appropriate testing
devices and a large data base.

COMBUSTION CHAMBER
DESIGN

A combustion chamber design has to

combine defined engine specifications 4000 RPM FULL LOAD
with various parameters such as:
10°ca

- injection system capabilities: fuel

delivery, nozzle flow-rate, number of
holes, etc.;
22°ca end of injection

- turbocharging capabilities: gas

density, fuel delivery, etc.;
30°ca

- cylinderhead capabilities: air motion,

port deactivation;

80°ca
- engine limiting factors:
in-cylinder pressure, exhaust
temperature, smoke, etc.

As a result of an intensive work

programme, IFP has selected key
design criteria able to integrate all the
above mentioned requirements. These
criteria are now applied to all new
design requests.

suppliers, IFP has developed tools and
expertise in FIS design.
IFP concentrates its efforts in
common-rail system design and
electronic management. The main
available development tools are:
- FIS development test bench
equipped with a high speed data
acquisition;
- FIS endurance test cycles and test
bench; Multispray injection test cell

- multispray injection test cell;

- rapid prototyping software of control
algorithms.
