Activity:​ Introduction to Student Services & What is bullying?

Learning Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to identify student services staff and be aware of what they do.
2. Students will identify bullying characteristics and ways to respond appropriately.

Materials:
PPT lesson (google drive) Projector
Example of Self-referral form and box Copy of Pre/post test

Procedure:
1.) Student services staff introduce themselves and share personal information to build rapport.
2.) Information is shared on what each member does and how students can contact staff.
3.) Students share their previous experiences with school counselors/social workers.
4.) Group discussion: What are examples of bullying? How is bullying described?
5.) Share information on bullying characteristics: intentional, repetitive, and aggressive. Use the definition to distinguish
between one time situations and bullying
6.) Describe the 3 people involved in bullying: Victim, Bully, Bystander (and describe who has the most power)
7.) Students brainstorm: Why do people bully? What can a bystander do? What can a victim do?
8.) Student practice using assertive messaging and I-statements
9.) Students commit to work towards a “Bully-free zone”
10.) Students complete post-test

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?


Process Data: Attendance during each class will be taken, information from all sessions will be compiled

Perception Data:
Objective 1
Pre: Student perceptions of role of school counselor and identification of previous school counselor
Post: Student identification of school counselors and naming of actions.
Objective 2
Pre: Discussion of student previous knowledge/ experience
Post: Verbal quiz on roles, characteristics, and actions associated with bullying.

Outcome Data:​ Bullying referrals, conflict resolution needs, student self-referrals, teacher/ staff referrals

Follow Up:
6th graders are able to meet with school counselors given needs.
6th graders are aware of how they can contribute to a bully-free zone (individual or group follow up may be necessary
New students to Shepard know who are the school counselors and what they do so they can request to meet. Students are
aware of actions that contribute to a bully-free zone (individual or group follow up may be necessary
