3 Types of Model

A model is a representation of a system used to study it. Models can be mathematical, using equations, or physical. Simulation models are a type of mathematical model that represent systems statically at a point in time or dynamically over time. Simulation models can also be deterministic or stochastic with random inputs, and discrete or continuous depending on whether the system changes continuously or discretely over time.

Model of a system

• A model is defined as a representation of a system for the

purpose of studying the system.

Types of Models
Models can be classified as being mathematical or physical.
Mathematical model uses symbolic notation and mathematical
equations to represent a system.
Simulation model is a particular type of mathematical model of
a system.
Types of simulation models
• Static or dynamic
• Static simulation model, sometimes called a Monte Carlo simulation,
represents a system at a particular point in time.
• Dynamic simulation models represent systems as they change over time.
• Deterministic or stochastic
• Deterministic models have a known set of inputs which will result in a
unique set of outputs.
• Stochastic simulation model has one or more random variables as inputs.
Random inputs lead to random outputs.
• Discrete or continuous
• Discrete simulation model is not always used to model a discrete system
• Continuous simulation model always used to model a continuous system.
