Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Timeline can be used for all students within the classroom by providing the students with a different way of
putting their ideas together. By using this tool, the teacher does not have to limit it to just a Social Studies. For
example, in my lesson plan, I will be using the timeline to aid in a writing prompt for the students. Also, I
believe if one student likes this tool enough they will be able to use it for different subjects and learning
activities. This tool allows visual learners to add in pictures to help represent the event that occurred.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will tell the students to pick at least five important events in their life. For example, the birth of a
baby sibling, family vacation, new dog, etc... The students will use the timeline to put the events in their lives
in chronological order from what happened first to what is the most recent. The teacher will show the
students an example of the timeline that they created based on the events in their lives. I would say that this
assignment could take about an hour or so because the students are creating the timeline and writing two
paragraphs to describe what happened within their timeline.

The students will be assessed by seeing if their writing correlates to the timeline created and if they were able
to put their events into chronological order, which the papers will be turned into a box and the timelines
would be emailed. The final product would be used to discuss sequencing and the proper way students should
use those vocabulary words. I would extend the student learning to higher learning by having the students
expand on their writing and provide details that discuss what happened during the events. I would conclude
the lesson by allowing the students to work in small groups and talk about the events that were added to their
timeline. I would provide feedback to the students by creating an extra timeline slots to explain what the
students did do right.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that this activity would give the students a more hands-on experience to a reading and writing
assignment and it becomes more personal because they are writing about something that is important to

them. To extend the lesson, I would have the students add more events to their timeline and add more
sentences to the essay that they will be writing overtime. Some other technology tool that could enhance this
project would be having tablets or computers that are touchscreen, so that they students could draw their
own pictures.
