Biodiversity: Hierarchy in The Classification of Organisms

The document outlines the hierarchical classification system used for living organisms. It states that there are five kingdoms that organisms can be classified into. Each kingdom is then divided into smaller taxonomic units like phyla, classes, orders, families, genera and finally species, which is the smallest unit. The hierarchical system provides a standardized way to group and categorize different types of living things based on their biological similarities and differences.

(R.H.

Whittaker) Biodiversity Hierarchy in the classification of Organisms

• All classification scheme are based on hierarchy of groups of
Living organisms can be classified into five kingdom animals.

• A taxon is the name given to group or category in a

classification system.
• The largest taxon in the classification scheme is called a
kingdom. The kingdom is divided into smaller units called
phyla. A phylum can be subdivided into classes, each class
into orders, each order into families, each family into
genera, and each genus into species. The smallest unit in the
hierarchy is the species.
