SOP for Sequential Batch Reactor
Purpose:
The raw effluent shall be taken up for Biological treatment for the removal of organics,
nitrogen, phosphorus, remaining sulfides and phenols (as per outlet quality requirement),
after pH adjustment by addition of caustic or acid, as required.
Introduction:
Raw effluent is collected and pumped into the Primary Treatment Units for removal
of free and emulsified oil. After primary treatment, the effluent is taken into parallel
SBR Basins for biological degradation of organics.
There are three operating SBR basins in the plant. These SBR basins work in
sequence and the influent flow is distributed using Automatic Gates provided at the
Inlet Chamber of SBR basins. The SBR basins are equipped with air blowers,
diffusers, Return Activated Sludge (RAS) pumps, Surplus Activated Sludge (SAS)
pumps, Decanters, Auto valves, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) etc. All cycles
will be automatically controlled using PLC.
SBR works with a simple batch sequence of aeration and non-aeration phases that are
controlled by repeating timers. The same operation cycle is in use in both reactors, only the
start times of the cycle are shifted.
Each cycle consists of the following combined phases:
FILL / AERATE FA
SETTLE / DECANT SD
Within the durations of the combined phases, start- and stop time for the basic phase Aerate
(A) canbe adjusted for each reactor by SCADA input. Start- and stop time for Fill (F) and the
start time forDecant (D) can be adjusted only in the PLC program.
Process Chemistry
The system selected is capable of achieving the following:
Biological selection of floc forming to suppress bulking / foaming and allow cocurrent
nitrification / denitrification (N/DN) and Bio-P
Bio-degradation of organics present in the wastewater by Extended Aeration

1. All safety showers and eye washes are operational.
2. All pumps, blowers, XVs should be in auto mode.
3. All analysers such as DO should be in line.

3.4 During the decanting period surplus sludge (SAS) is drawn off. Info
The amount is determined through the last measured value of
dry solids in the reactor.
3.5 SAS-pumps provide the removal of Surplus activated Sludge. The Info/Panel
operating time is set according to the level of solids to be Officer
removed.
