4 CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY

4.1 Summary
This MS will be outlining the sequences and methods of works intended for the MV/F.O cable
pulling, laying, glanding, termination.

4.2 Methodology

Step Description

1 Permit, Safety and Site Preparation

2 Method Statement for MV Cable Pulling, Laying, Glanding, Termination

4.3 Permit, Access, Approval and Site Preparation

a. Obtain necessary permit such as Permit To Work (PTW) from the contractor.
b. Check relevant items like PPE’s, access of working area, equipment to be used etc. to
ensure safety, workability and environmental requirements.
c. Review Specification and drawings. (Approved Drawings / Specification )
d. Ensure that the material’s type, size, area classification etc. conform to the project
specifications and drawings.
e. Ensure that proper materials are available and approved for use.
f. Route measurement shall be done and identification of drum placement points to be marked
prior to material being shifted.
g. Approved cable laying schedule should be in the site.
h. Cable trenches should be inspected by the contractor/engineer prior to laying.

4.4 MV/FO Cable Pulling, Laying, Glanding, Termination

4.4.1 Cable Trench Approval and Preparation

a) Ensure that route / trench where the cable is to be pulled is handed over and clearance
is given (a joint walk down to be conducted by all concerned parties).
b) Check the availability of proper cables to be used and ensure that these are approved.
Ensure that the latest approved drawing shall be used.
c) Check and ensure that cable trench / trough / draw pits are clean, free from debris all
along the route.
d) The length of cable route shall be measured to verify the length of cables required
e) Ground movement must be controlled and collapse prevented by systematically shoring,
sloping, benching, etc. as per the Project HSE Plan and Excavations and earthworks (
DWA-00-HS-PR-EPC-0016).
f) Material shall not keep on the edge of the trenches. It shall keep minimum 100 cm away
from the edge.
g) Do not use contaminated soil for backfilling. No workers allowed in the trenches while
offloading sand/soil for backfilling.
h) All activities in the trench must continuously monitored by qualified thecnician/supervisor
and Safety officer.

4.4.2 Cable Duct and Draw Pit Preparation

a) Check and ensure that cable ducts / draw pits are clean, free from debris all along the
route, Use a pull through mandrill for cleaning conduits. Ducts internal to be checked by
using a correct size of mandrel and cleaned by using rags tied to a rope and pulled back
and forth from both ends and check that it is free from any sharp edges. Ensure that
ducts ends are also free from any sharp edges.
b) Suitable pedestal support with trolley will be installed at intermediate man hole (if
available) and monitored by personnel located at each manhole during the cable pulling.
c) Provide the identification on all ducts as per the approved drawings to ensure that the
correct usage of ducts and the correct number of cables will pass through.

4.4.3 Material Handling / Preparation of Cable Drum

a) Route measurement shall be done and identification of drum placement point prior to
material being shifted.
b) Necessary care shall be taken while transporting the cable drum on site.
c) Cable drum shall be transported on the trailer / cable trolley and ensure that the cable
drum stands on the flanges and well strapped during the transport stage.
d) All necessary precaution shall be taken while unpacking the cables drums or removal of
battens to avoid damage on the cable.
e) Rolling the drum shall not be allowed for longer distance and drums must be rolled only
in the direction of arrows marked on the drum.
f) Check and ensure the correct tonnage capacity of crane to be used with a competent
operator and riggers. Equipment to be third party certified as required.
g) Position the crane in a suitable location as indicated in the approved lift plan (if any).
h) Ensure that the ground is fully compacted and can handle the crane’s heavy load.
i) Check the appropriate type / length of slings to be used as well as the shackles. Ensure
that all lifting gears are inspected, approved and with correct color coded.
j) Position the transport vehicle in a suitable area where the crane can easily reach and
access.
k) Place the cable drums as close as possible to the location where the cables to be laid.

4.4.4 Cable Pulling / Laying

a) Maintain a register of all cable pulling equipment including winch, winch rope, shackles,
swivels, slings & socks.
b) Cable rollers shall be placed at approximate distance between rollers by 1.0 meter – 1.5
meters and fixed well along the route. Check each roller if it is rolling smoothly, apply
WD40 or grease as required. To ensure the stability of each roller laid on loose sand
bedding, a wooden pieces or plastic sheets are to be placed under the base of each
roller.
c) Wherever necessary, cables are to be applied with approved pulling compound for
smooth and easy pulling when entering cable ducts and the cables to be fixed with bell
mouths or cable sock.
d) During the installation the drums (especially with heavy loads) turning/rolling will be
slowed down/stop using a built in brakes so as to prevent the turns of the drum from
becoming loose and scrapping on the floor. A layer of protective material for the cable
will be laid under the drum to act as a barrier to prevent stones or other loose materials
from touching the cable.
e) Winch machine with suitable capacity shall be used whenever required. When cable is
being pulled by winch machine ensure to use swivel.
f) Winch machine cut off device shall be set only 75% of the maximum pulling tension for
each cable type required by the cable manufacturer.

METHOD STATEMENT: MV/FO Cable laying,

Jointing, Termination

g) Copy of vendor data sheet of each cable being pulled shall be available at site with
supervisor and or with the winch machine operator.
h) Good communication measures / devices shall be used / maintained for a good and safe
cable pulling / laying operation. Two way radio (walkie – talkie) or mobile phones will be
used for communication.
i) Both ends of cable shall be capped / taped / sealed with Glue lined heat shrink caps and
proper identification shall be provided
j) Provide a cable tags/ identification on each cable at least 250mm away from the duct
entry as well as along the cable trench route with a distance as per the project
specifications or approved drawing details at intervals of 20 meters distance.
k) Inspection shall be carried out by the Contracor/Engineer by notifying them through
Inspection Request form, necessary check list to be filled up and signed.
l) Once cables have been laid in the trenches that one shall be immediately backfilled, in
order to avoid any Catastrophe.
m) Joins in cables shall be avoided in the cable route, as much as possible. MV & FOC
cable termination shall be made in Power block / Inverter Block [ as applicable]

4.4.5 Mounting of termination Kit, Glanding and Termination
