Testing grammar (task types and task effects)

Hughes 141-146

Why test grammar?

- Previously – grammatical structures were considered to be the core of language ability it was
inevitable to test them
- Change – language skills are important they should be tested  Proficiency tests do this
- Backwash effect of tests measure mastery of skills directly – preferable when tests encourage the
learning of grammatical structures in isolation, with no need to use them.
- The most proficiency tests administered on a large scale – involve a grammar section
a large number of items can be administered and scored within a short period of time
Q of content validity is important
to test writing ability directly – limited number of topics, styles of writing can be chosen
?operations – we can cover in any one version of the test ?
we cannot be sure that the sample chosen/samples in a proficiency grammar test include a
representative of all possible grammatical structures
doubt about testing grammar in proficiency tests
- Include grammar component in
 achievement tests
 placement tests
 diagnostic tests of teaching institutions
- Teaching of grammar is necessary
consider the advisability of including grammar component in achievement tests
if yes, from the point of view of backwash, it is prudent not to give prominence in relation
to tests of skills ?
- Grammar – important in institution’s teaching
Grammatical ability or the lack of it limits what Ss can achieve in the testing of skills.
Successful writing of academic assignments depend on the command of grammatical structures
- Placement tests
Information about Ss’ grammatical knowledge is important. to place them in the most
appropriate class
- Useful to know the gaps in Ss’ grammatical knowledge for individual Ss, groups of Ss
to obtain reliable, diagnostic info of grammatical knowledge
