This document provides information about a pretensioned concrete roof beam that is 10 meters long and simply supported. It includes the beam dimensions, material properties, and loads. Students are asked to calculate the extreme bottom stress at the midspan considering or not considering the prestressing steel in the centroid, and comment on the results. Relevant information about the beam geometry, materials, loads, and calculation to be performed are provided.

Beirut Arab University Quiz (02-10-2013)

Dept. of Civil Engineering-Debbieh Campus Allowed time: 40min

Prestressed Concrete (CIVE 470) Fall Semester (2013-2014)
Student Name: ID: .

The pretensioned roof beam shown below is a simply supported over a span of 10.0 m. It is
required to check the bottom stress versus the allowable stress ONLY at service stage. The
beam is subjected to uniform superimposed gravity dead load intensity of 15.5kN/m and
live-load intensity of 11.0 kN/m. The ten 12.7 mm diameter strands has cover to prestressed
reinforcement of 100mm as shown.
The initial prestress at transfer stage is fpi= 1300 Mpa.
i) Compute ONLY the extreme bottom stress at midspan
a- If the prestressing steel is not considered for the centroid of the section.
b- If the prestressing steel is considered for the centroid of the section.
ii) Comment on the result between the parts a and b

Given:
f′c =35 Mpa, concrete compressive strength at 28days
f′ci =25 Mpa, concrete compressive strength at transfer stage
f ci=15 Mpa, Allowable compressed stress at transfer stage
f c=21Mpa, Allowable compressed stress at service stage
f t=2.95 Mpa, Allowable tensile stress at service stage 600mm
f ti=1.25 Mpa, Allowable tensile stress at transfer stage 100mm
Modular ratio: n=7
Concrete unit weight=25kN/m3
Strand’s area=99mm2
300mm
