    Discrete Graphics thermal requirements

    The HP ZBook 15 and ZBook 17 products support several


    NVIDIA discrete graphic MXM card options that offer
    different amounts of video memory, transfer speeds, and
    power ratings.
    Due to the cooling requirements of the graphic cards, the
    cards have different thermal designs that require various
    thermal grease and thermal pad placement. This
    placement is important to note during a service event.
    Note: HP recommends that the thermal grease and thermal pads be replaced each time a
    Graphics heat sink / fan assembly is removed from the system.
    This job aid provides the details about the various thermal requirements, including the

    HP ZBook 15 and ZBook 17

    HP ZBook 17 graphics card heat sink / fan assemblies


    The HP ZBook 17 supports the following NVIDIA discrete graphic card options at initial
    launch in August 2013:
     NVIDIA Quadro K3100M (N15E-Q1) - 75W
     NVIDIA Quadro K4100M (N15E-Q3) - 100W
     NVIDIA Quadro K5100M (N15E-Q5) – 100W
     NVIDIA Quadro K610M (N15M-Q2) - 40 W

    The N15E-Qn Graphics heat sink / fan assembly uses one type of design, and the N15M-
    Q2 uses another. The location of the cards within the system and the removal and
    replacement procedures are similar for all of these heat sink / fan assemblies. The
    following graphic shows where the heat sink / fan assemblies are located in the ZBook
    17 (top view):

    Note: The N15E-Q3/Q5 heat sink / fan assemblies have a copper cover on the top side (as
    shown in the top view graphic above); the N15E-Q1 and N15M-Q2 have an aluminum
    cover.

    The following section applies to the N15E-Q1, N15E-Q3, and N15E-Q3 NVIDIA graphics
    MXM modules, collectively referred to here as N15E-Qn.

    Layout and placement of thermal pads


    The following graphic shows each of the thermal pads included on the N15E-Qn Graphics
    heat sink / fan assembly. The table that follows identifies the purpose, quantity, and size
    of the thermal pads:

    N15M-Q2 (40W) Graphics heat sink / fan assembly


    The location of the N15M-Q2 (40W) heat sink / fan assembly on the system board is the
    same as the N15E-Qn heat sink / fan assemblies. The N15M-Q2 has an aluminum top
    cover.

    The following graphic shows each of the thermal pads included on the N15M-Q2 thermal
    assembly. The table that follows identifies the purpose, quantity, and size of the thermal
    pads.
    Note: The N15M-Q2 graphics card and heat sink / fan assembly is offered on both the HP

    Discrete Graphics heat sink / fan assembly job aid

    MXM card thermal pad (75W and 100W graphics cards)


    An additional thermal pad is required for the 75W and 100W NVIDIA Graphics cards on
    the ZBook 17. This thermal pad is applied to the system board below the MXM card, as
    shown in the following graphic.

    If a 75W or 100W NVIDIA Graphics MXM card is removed, you must replace the thermal
    pad by applying it to the system board before replacing the MXM card.
    Note: The thermal pad is much thicker than the other thermal pads used the Graphics
    heat sink / fan assemblies discussed above. Be sure to use the correct thermal pad for
    this location.
    Tech Tip: There is one additional thermal pad on the HP ZBook 17 between the top cover
    and the system board. This thermal pad should be replaced each time the system board
    is removed. This pad is included with the System Board spare. The following graphic
    shows the location of this thermal pad:

    The HP ZBook 15 supports the following NVIDIA discrete graphic card options:

     NVIDIA Quadro K2100M (N15P-Q3) - 55W
    The N15P-Q1 and Q3 Graphics heat sink / fan assemblies use one type of design, and the

    N15M-Q2 (40W) Graphics heat sink / fan assembly


    The N15M-Q2 graphic card and Graphics heat sink / fan assembly is used on both the HP
    ZBook 17 and HP ZBook 15 products. Please refer to the previous section for the details
    and layout of this option.

    Ordering spare parts

    The thermal pads required for each Graphics heat sink / fan assembly are included in the
    spares kit for that assembly. In addition, FRU components that require the removal of
    the Graphics heat sink / fan assembly will also provide thermal pads.
