Renaissance Revisited - Hum Component

The document provides instructions for a group project on inventions from the Renaissance. Students must create a tri-fold board with three sections: 1) details on a Renaissance invention and its impact, 2) how simple machines were used in the invention and in building a Rube Goldberg machine, and 3) design process documentation and reflection. Groups will present their boards and machines at a Renaissance fair. The project aims to demonstrate understanding of innovations from the Renaissance and their effects on worldviews, as well as communicating ideas through oral presentation and writing.

Renaissance Revisited!- Humanities Component

Objectives:
● Demonstrate an understanding of innovations during the Renaissance and how these changes impacted
worldview
● Communicate Humanities, Science and Math content effectively, both orally, and in writing
○ How can you best organize your ideas to effectively communicate with your audience?
○ How can you use public speaking techniques to best communicate to your audience?

Tri-Fold Requirements:
Section 1:
● Name of Renaissance invention researched and an explanation of how the invention itself has changed
society over time (think worldview!)
● Invention timeline- tracking changes and innovations over time
● Short inventor bio (for the chosen invention)
● Explanation of how the simple machines made the researched invention work better/easier
Section 2:
● Explanation as to why you chose the specific simple machines for your Rube Goldberg machine and
how they increased your mechanical advantage
● Name of Rube Goldberg machine and materials used
● Explanation of how your researched invention guided the building of your Rube Goldberg machine
Section 3:
● Design process tracking- min. 5 pictures with captions explaining challenges faced and how you overcame
them
● Copy of the scale diagram (original will be handed in to math teacher)
● Reflection- if you could do this project again, what would you do differently next time?

Assessment:
See the attached rubric for assessment details. As always with group projects, though you are working in a group
with others, you will sometimes be assessed as individuals within the group.

Timeline and Due Dates:

● April 9-13: all core class time is dedicated to project work
○ It’s important that you divide and conquer! Divvy up the work and stay on task to complete as much
as you can this week.
● April 16-19: one Hum class a day will be dedicated to project work time (many students are absent for Band
Tour so please ensure you have communicated well as a group about who is responsible for what)
● April 23-27: one Hum class a day will be dedicated to project work time
○ All trifold components must be complete by April 27th and ready for assessment
● Wednesday, May 2: trifold is due
● Tuesday, May 8: Renaissance Revisited Fair in the Learning Commons

A Word of Warning from your Wise Teachers: The due dates in this assignment are closer than they may appear!
Do not underestimate the size of this task. Get started early, ask for help if needed, and don’t leave anything to the
