Educational Standards

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when,
why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in
a text.

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events
and challenges.

Objective
• The students will be able to discuss and identify the main
points of the story with 85% accuracy.

Materials Needed
• The book “Strictly No Elephants” by Lisa Mantchev
• Writing utensils (Crayons, markers, colored pencils)
• White board & Marker
• A variety of different and unique paper animals cut out, for
students to color, and to write on.

Procedure

1. Introduce: Show the students the book, “Strictly No

Elephants,” and ask them “Have any of you ever felt like you
were not included, and if so how did it make you feel?” Briefly
describe what it is like to feel un-included with the students,
by allowing students to answer the question out loud. Jot down
the students answers on the white board to allow them to be
able to follow along better. Then, ask them to think to
themselves about what the picture on the cover of the book
might mean.
2. Read: Teacher reads the book out loud, for 5 minutes.
3. Discuss: Among each other, students will discuss the six
questions, “who, what, when, where, why and how?” After
discussing these questions with one another, we will discuss
what each of these questions means as a class. The teacher
will jot down on the white board what the students answer for
each one of these questions. This discussion will allow them to
broaden their knowledge and perspective on the book.
4. Activities: Students will be given a variety of different, and
unique paper animal choices to choose from. With this animal,
they will first write down 3 ways that they can include
everyone. After the writing is done, the students will color the
animal however they would like. These animals, of all different
varieties will then be hung on the classroom walls. This activity
for the students is a way to represent to the class that
everyone is different, but we can still be accepting of them.

Evaluation

• The teacher will look over all of the student’s work and
make sure that all of the students understand the
concept of the story. The teacher will then read aloud to
the class the three ways off of each student’s animal,
that they can include and accept everyone.
