INSTRUCTIONS: Select the correct answer for each of the following questions. Show the step by step solutions for questions requiring
solutions. Any form of cheating is prohibited.

Problems:

1. A smooth, flat, thin fin of copper extending out from a tube is 60 mm by 60 mm square. Its temperature is approximately
uniform at 82.2oC. Cooling air at 16oC and 14.7 psia flows parallel to the fin at a velocity of 12.2 m/s.
a. For laminar flow, calculate the heat-transfer coefficient.
b. For turbulent flow, calculate the heat transfer coefficient.
2. If air at 1 atm abs pressure and 16oC is flowing at a velocity of 24.2 m/s, predict the average heat transfer coefficient for
air flowing past a sphere having diameter of 51 mm and an average surface temperature of 82.2oC.
3. Air at 13.6oC and 1 atm abs flows across a bank tubes containing four transverse rows in the direction of flow and 10
rows normal to the flows at a velocity of 8 m/s as the air approaches the bank tubes. The tube surface are maintained at
60oC. The outside diameter of the tubes is 25.4 mm and the tubes are in-line to the flow. The spacing Sn of the tubes
normal to the flow is 38.1 mm and Sp is also 38.1 mm parallel to the flow. For a 0.305 m length of the tube bank, calculate
the heat transfer rate.
4. Calculate the junction diameter of a copper thermocouple, initially at 25oC which when placed in a gas stream at 200oC
measures a temperature of 198oC in 5 seconds. Data; density= 8940 kg/m3, cp= 384 J/kg-K, k=390 W/m-K and the
convective heat transfer coefficient = 400 W/m2-K.
5. What will be the Biot number for a 2.5 cm diameter, 1% carbon steel sphere at 100oC subjected to a convective air flow
resulting in h= 55 W-m-K.
6. What time would it take for a 1.25 cm diameter carbon steel (1%C) sphere to cool from initial temperature of 500oC to
100oC if exposed to a cooling bulk air flow of 25oC which gives a convective heat transfer of 110 W/m2-K
7. Determine the maximum edge dimension of a solid aluminum cube at 100oC subjected to a convective heat transfer with
h= 25 W/m2-K for a lumped analysis to be accurate to within 5%?
8. A large block of steel (k=45 W/m-K, and a= 1.4 x 10-5 m2/s) is initially at a uniform temperature of 35oC. The surface is
exposed to a heat flux (a) by suddenly raising the temperature to 250oC and (b) through a constant surface heat flux of 3.2
x 105 W/m2. Calculate the temperature at a depth of 25 mm after a time of 0.5 min for both these cases.
