1.1 Introduction
A signaling network consisting of
l signaling points
l signaling links
l signaling link sets
l signaling routes and signaling route sets
must be created by operator via MML commands.
With the aid of the appropriate database the MTP is then able to carry out its tasks.

1.2 Own Signaling Point

1.2.1 Function and MML Command
Every signaling point can be uniquely identified within a network on the basis of its
code. This code can be made up of 14 or 24 bit and is entered in a structured form.
Besides, the function of a signaling point must be released, i.e. whether it is a
signaling transfer point or a signaling end point.
With the aid of this data the function message discrimination can be carried out, i.e.
the comparison of the received destination point code with the own signaling point
code.
The MML command for creating the own signaling point is shown in Fig. 2 Create
C7OP. The individual parameters are explained on the following pages.

1.2.2 SPC (Signaling Point Code)

The signaling point code must be entered in structured form. This structure may
consist of one, two, three or four units. The required structure selection is country-
specific and can be defined only by patch.
At present the following structures can be offered:
In a network with network indicator NAT0 or NAT1 and 14 bits:
1. 4 units a-b-c-d
with a = 0 - 15 c = 0 - 15
b=0-7 d=0-7

2. 2 units a-b
with a = 0 - 31 b = 0 - 511

3. 3 units a-b-c
with a = 0 - 7, b = 0 - 15, c = 0 - 127

4. 1 units a
with a = 0 - 16383

A network with network indicator INAT0 allows a structure composed of 3 units.

3 units a-b-c
with a=0-7
b = 0 - 255
c=0-7
Inside the system and during signaling the structured code is always transferred as
an unstructured value.

1.2.3 Network Indicator

The network indicator indicates the scope of the signaling point code. As the
signaling point code with 14 bit D'16383 is insufficient to address all signaling points
world-wide, it is always used together with the network indicator.
The network indicator has the following meaning:
NAT0 National network provider's network
NAT1 Superordinate network between national network operators
INAT0 International network between network operators that have an
international signaling point code
INAT1 Not used.
As the network indicator recognizes only the NAT0, NAT1, INAT0 and INAT1 values,
the international addressing of signaling points remains incomplete, of course.
That is why the following method is used for international signaling:
The SPC is valid within one network only. Therefore the SPC and the NETIND must
be set anew for each transition e.g. NAT0->NAT1->INAT0->NAT1->NAT0. A pre-
requisite for this is that the gateway switching center belongs to both networks e.g.
NAT0 and NAT1, and that there is a clear international address for the end
destination.
The clear international address is not a problem for the ISDN user part (ISUP), as in
this case the called party address (called end) is addressed link by link anyway and
evaluated in each switching center.
However, for other users, e.g. mobile application part, a clear international address
must be made available which can be used for new address calculation. This new
calculation is carried out by SCCP. The international HLR, VLR, MSC ISDN etc. can
be also be sent as clear international address. These addresses are called Global
Titles.

1.2.4 STPI (Signaling Transfer Point Identifier):

= SP (Signaling point functions purely as a signaling end point)

= STP (Signaling point functions as signaling transfer point and signaling end
point)

A signaling point marked as signaling end point can distribute a received message to
its own users only. Should the address field indicate that a transfer is required, the
signaling point discards the message and increments the discarded-message
counter.

1.3 Signaling Link Set

1.3.1 Function
A link set consisting of up to 16 links connects the own signaling point to a neigh-
boring signaling point which can either be a signaling end point or a signaling transfer
point. Only one link set can be created between two adjacent signaling points which
are specified via their SPC and NETIND (network indicator).
Every link set and the links it is made up of is clearly allocated to a network indicator
and is used as signaling route to reach a specific destination point code.

1.3.2.1 Loadsharing between Signaling Links (LSK)

The LSK (Loadsharing Key 0...15) parameter contains the key for the load
distribution of all traffic on a link set among the links allocated to it.
The link table of each link set contains 16 elements each filled with an active link of
this link set. When routing a message signal unit the link table element is selected
with the help of the SLS field (4 Bit: 0000...1111/D'0...15).
Which active link is used for routing a message signal unit depends on the way the
links are distributed over the link table. The LSK of the link set influences the
allocation of the available active links to the 16 elements of the link table. Finally this
means that the LSK determines the assignment of a given SLS to the active link to be
chosen.

1.3.2.1.1 Effect of the LSK on Structure of the Link Table

The link table is divided into so called traffic units. A traffic unit can occupy 1, 2 up to
16 elements of the link table. All elements occupied by the same traffic unit are filled
with the same active link.
l The LSK determines how many traffic units are managed in the link table. In other
words, the LSK specifies the maximum number of active links, which can be used
for message routing. To do this, the decimal LSK is converted into a binary value.
The number of bits which is set to 1 is decisive for the number of traffic units:
Number of traffic units = 2number of binary 1s in the LSK
e.g. LSK = 3: binary 0011 number of traffic units = 22 = 4
or
e.g. LSK = 7: binary 0111 number of traffic units = 23 = 8

l The LSK determines the allocation of the link table elements (addressed by SLS
values) to the traffic units. For this purpose the binary LSK value is placed over the
SLS field as a mask. The decimal value of the masked bits indicates the number of
the allocated traffic units:
e.g.: LSK = 3: binary = 0011 =>
SLS = XX00 => Traffic Unit 0
SLS = XX01 => Traffic Unit 1
SLS = XX10 => Traffic Unit 2
SLS = XX11 => Traffic Unit 3

1.3.2.1.2 Distribution of the Active Links Among the Traffic Units

The link table contains only the active signaling links. The active links should be
represented as evenly as possible in the link table. There can only be a maximum
of as many links as there are traffic units.
The link table is set-up a new each time a link configuration takes place.
The method for setting up of the link table is as follows, it starts with traffic unit 0 and
will be run through until all traffic units in ascending sequence are filled:
Inspection of whether none, one or several of the active links are underrepresented in
the already filled traffic units.
l If one: the next traffic unit is filled with this link.
l If several: the next traffic unit is filled with the highest priority (set-up sequence
with CRC7 LINK) of these underrepresented links.
l If none: the next traffic unit is filled with the highest priority (set-up sequence with
CR C7LINK) of the links to be distributed.

1.3.2.2 Permanent Link Test (PERLTEST)

If the PERLTEST parameter is set to ON, a link test of the links allocated to the link
set is carried out every 90 seconds.
The test checks the L2 functions between two adjacent SPs.
Testing and maintenance sends a Signaling Link Test Message (SLTM) to the
partner which includes a test pattern. The partner responds with a Signaling Link
Test Acknowledgement (SLTA) containing the reflected test pattern.
The following data are checked during the test:
1. the Signaling Link Code (SLC)
2. the OPC (SLTM-DPC = SLTA-OPC)
3. the test pattern (which is merely looped back in the acknowledgement)
The test is positive only if the link status is "in service".

1.4 Signaling Link

1.4.1 Function
A signaling link is part of a link set and can be uniquely identified by a link code
(0...15).
The signaling link is assigned certain characteristics such as transmission rate and
correction procedure.
In addition, the link set is allocated a SILTD which represents the interface to the
64 kbit/s transmission channel.

1.4.2 MML Command

LSNAM (link set name):

= symbolic name of a link set

LCOD (link code):

= 0...15
the value fixes the signaling link code (SLC)
As only one link set may exist between two adjacent signaling points, the link
code between two adjacent signaling points is unique. It is important to ensure
that the same code is allocated to the signaling link in both nodes, as Level 3 will
check for matching codes when the link is activated (see CR C7LSET:
PERLTEST=ON).

SILTNO (SILT number):

= 0...255
physical SILT-number assigned to the link.

LINKNO (link number):

= 0...255
number of the database element.

LTYPE (link type)

= D64BWM
D64PWM
A04BWM
fixes the attribute of the link.
One of two different failure correction methods – the basic error correction method
and PCR correction method – can be selected for a signaling link.
The transmission rate can be defined, too. The third and final definition option refers
to the selection of a table of timer threshold values. At present one of the following
link types can be selected:
LTYPE Transmission rate Correction method
D64BWM: DIGIT 64 K basic
D64PWM: DIGIT 64 K PCR
A04BWM: ANALOG 4.8 K basic

1.4.3 Further MML Commands

Blocking of signaling links

A link can be cancelled with CAN C7LINK. A prerequisite for this is that the link was
configured with CONF C7LINK on BL1.
The BL1 and BL2 status' can be input in the CONF C7LINK command:
l BL1 means that level 2 and 3 of the link are blocked, i.e. only the physical link
connection (level 1) still exists.
l BL2 means that only the level 3 of the link is blocked, i.e. LSSUs (level 2) continue
to be exchanged.

Inhibiting of signaling links

The so-called inhibit status (transient status) can be set for a signaling link via
MOD C7LINK. Inhibit means that the link is no longer used for user part messages
(level 3 is blocked). If a destination point threatens isolation (last not blocked or
inhibited link fails) however, the link is automatically put back into operation. The
same applies for recoveries.

1.5 Nailed-Up Connection

As mentioned above, the signaling link is defined by the allocation of the signaling
link code and by the SILTD hardware. A SILTD module is responsible for one
signaling link in each case.
The physical connection to an adjacent signaling point is implemented via a random
time slot (1...31). This PCM time slot functions as a TRUNK which again is allocated
to a trunk group. The TRUNK is switched through semipermanently to the corres-
ponding SILTD module (nailed-up connection). A nailed-up connection is defined by
two equipment numbers. One equipment number is the PCM time slot of the TRUNK
while the other is the stage of the SILTD module. Every nailed-up connection can be
administered and switched through semipermanently in the switching network.

Siemens Appendix: Administration of the SS7 Network in EWSD Classic

Since a nailed-up connection always considers two positions (equipment numbers),

one incoming and one outgoing, the following rule is applied when creating a nailed-
up connection for signaling links:
l the position (equipment number) of the PCM time slot is always the incoming side
of the nailed-up connection
l the position (equipment number) of the SILTD time slot is always the outgoing side
of the nailed-up connection

A nailed-up connection is created via the command CR NUC.

l In the case of signaling links, the parameter TYPE must always be set to MUX
because the NUC leads to the multiplexer of the CCNC.
l The rule indicated above concerning the “incoming / outgoing ports” also applies
when the parameters LTGIC / LCIC (incoming port, i.e. PCM timeslot) and LTGOG
/ LCOG (outgoing port, i.e. SILTD) are used. The information units of the two
parameters contain the following:
a) trunk port: here the same values are used as for the parameter LTG/LC in the
command CR TRUNK, which was used to reserve this timeslot for
transportation of a signaling link (level1 of C7LINK)
b) SILTD port:
LTGOG: value obtained as output to the command DISP MUX
LCOG value is obtained with the aid of the allocation list in the TML
(command CR NUC). In this list one can find the corresponding
information units for every SILTD module:

TIP
The MML command STAT C7L1 displays per signaling link, which SN (0 or 1) is used
for the active part of the duplicated NUC.

1.6 Signaling Routes

1.6.1 Functions of the Destination Point
In every signaling point of a network, all other signaling points of the same network to
which messages can be sent and received respectively must be created as
destination points. These destination points can be reached from the own signaling
point either via a direct signaling link set (i.e. destination point is adjacent) or via one
or more intermediate signaling points, so-called signaling transfer points. The link
sets to another signaling point of the own network are known as routes. Thus, a
destination point is characterized by a destination point code (signaling point code of
the destination point), by the corresponding network indicator and by the routes (link
sets) which lead to it directly or indirectly.

1.6.2 Own Area and Foreign Area

Whenever state transitions occur in the signaling network, the signaling network
management must inform the other network elements. In a large signaling network
this leads to a vast number of messages. To prevent such message floods the
destination points can be divided into two groups: the points belonging to the own
area and the points belonging to the foreign area. In the own area all signaling
network management functions are performed, while in the foreign area the signaling
network management functions performed are restricted.
The foreign area is divisible into several routing areas. The division of the network
into own and foreign areas is defined separately in every signaling point. This means
a destination point may belong to the own area of signaling point A but to the foreign
area of signaling point B.

l Signaling points must be in the own area if:

there is a circuit group leading there
there is a signaling link leading there
If e.g. a signaling link between two signaling points of the own area fails, all other
signaling points in the own area are informed of this, i.e. network management is
guaranteed only in the own area.
Example:
Signaling link X ® Y has failed. X sends a Transfer Prohibited to D specifying that
DPC Y is no longer available. D can not switch over to the next link set to Y and
forwards the message to A and B. A does not forward the message because Y does
not belong to the own area of A.

l Signaling points should be located in a foreign area if:

the number of signaling points to be reached exceeds 2048
the message flood is to be stemmed for link failures

1.6.2.1 Creation of the Destination Point in the Own Area

As explained beforehand, the destination point is characterized by its DPC, NI and
the list of the signaling routes leading to it.

PRD (possible route directions):

= <lsnam1> & <lsnam2> & ...
Up to 8 link sets identified by their symbolic names can be assigned to a
destination point as possible route.
The sequence of these routes determines the priority of the signaling route.
In the most simple case, i.e. if there is no load sharing, the first route is the active
one and all the others are only used if the route preceding in each case fails.

LSK (load sharing key):

= 0 no load sharing
1-4 load sharing

1.6.2.2 Loadsharing between Routes

As the load is shared between only the first 2 active routes, the analysis of one bit in
the SLS field is sufficient to implement load sharing. The operator defines the bit
which is relevant for load sharing by MML.
As load sharing can take place only between two signaling link sets, the 16 possible
SLS values are divided into two halves (message stream groups). The term message
stream group is used to describe all the messages using the same link set to reach
one particular destination.
In other words: to transport the traffic to a specific destination (destination-oriented
load sharing)
l only one message stream group is used (if there is no load sharing) or
l two message stream groups are used (if load sharing is implemented).
The operator (LSK) specifies which bit in the SLS field will be analyzed. The selected
bit defines the assignment of message streams to message stream groups.

Siemens Appendix: Administration of the SS7 Network in EWSD Classic

The assignment of SLS field to message streams, and therefore to message

stream groups is fixed (semi permanent) and is described as static routing
information.
The link sets that actually carry the traffic are termed "current routes". Such link sets
can only be signaling routes that are in service at the time of transport, and each time
no more than two. Should one of the current routes fail, it is replaced by another
active signaling route, namely the one with the highest priority. This routing
information is termed dynamic (as opposed to fixed) and identifies the assignment of
signaling routes to message stream groups.
The allocation of routes to the message stream groups is carried out due to the
sequence of the linksets in the PRD parameter. It does not only give the names but
also the priority of the link set to be used.
Example: The following route possibilities are available to reach destination point B:
CR C7DP: DPC= B, PRD= AB&AC&AD, LSK=1;
Under the assumption that the AB and AC routes have active links available and can
consequently transport signaling load, load sharing occurs between AB and AC with
the LSK = 1. Route AD would be used only in the event of AB or AC failing. The LSK
= 1 evaluates the first bit of the SLS field, if this bit is set to 0, routing would occur via
message stream group 0 and therefore via route AB; if it is set to 1, routing would
occur via message stream group 1 and thus via route AC. With reference to ISDN
user part (ISUP) traffic, for example, this would mean that even CICs are routed via
AB and odd CICs are routed via AC.

route priority, i.e. the criteria according to which the routes are distributed among the
various message stream groups. The CUR. ROUTE field gives information about the
routes currently available, i.e. the routes via which signaling traffic actually flows.

1.6.2.3 Creation of the Destination Point in the Foreign Area

Destination points situated in one routing area can be reached via common routes.
This is why the administration is subdivided into three steps:
l Creation of a routing area and allocation of routes via which the routing area can
be reached.
l Creation of destination points and allocation to the routing area.
l Configuration of the routing area.

1.8 Summary
1.8.1 Allocation of CCS7 Database Objects to MML Commands
l The signaling message is created (or evaluated) by the corresponding user part for
the circuit connection (user channel) or by the corresponding “application part“ for
non-circuit-related connections or evaluated for incoming messages.
l Due to the fixed assignment of the sign. point code of the partner exchange to
each user channel trunk group (ENTR C7TGREL), the destination point code for
user channel-oriented signaling (e.g. ISUP) is available. For non-user channel-
oriented connections, special signaling control functions deliver the appropriate
destination point code as a routing label for the message.
l The own signaling point code flows into the message as the sender. It is specified
with the command CR C7OP.
l Up to 8 signaling link sets can be allocated to a destination point as possible
signaling routes. The route allocation and the definition of the destination point
code are done with the command CR C7 DP.
l A link set specifies a group of signaling links to an adjacent signaling point. It is
created with the command CR C7LSET.
l A signaling link allocates a SILTD module to a signaling link set. The
corresponding SILTD must be linked via a nailed-up connection with a PCM time
slot which leads to the corresponding adjacent signaling point. A signaling link is
administered using the command CR C7LINK.
l With the command CR NUC, the equipment number of the SILTD is semiper-
manently linked with the equipment number of the trunk. This trunk can be used
exclusively for signaling and must be allocated to a trunk group.

1.8.2 Allocation of MML Commands to the 4 Levels

l Level1
For level 1 you need to specify a trunk group with GCOS = CCSLGRP and a trunk.
This determines the physical time slot of the signaling link.
The time slot and the SILT D module are connected via the switching network with
the aid of a nailed-up connection. The connection is carried out with the commands
CR NUC and ACT NUC.
l Level 2
The SILT D module is configured from Status planned to Status active via the CONF
CCNC command.
l Level 2-3
Levels 2 and 3 are connected via the set up of a signaling link. This connection is
defined with CR C7LINK and the SILT and LSNAM parameters.
l Level 3
Using CR C7LSET/ CR C7DP or C7RTAREA, the routing function in level 3 is
supplied with the relevant data, as a selection of routes including a selection
specification (LSK) is made available here to a destination point or routing area.
The discrimination function in level 3 is supported with CR C7OP. This means that,
with help from the own SPC, the signaling point can decide whether it functions as a
signaling transfer point or as signaling end point for this message.
l Level 3-4
The C7 trunk group relation represents the link between the traffic orientated user
parts e.g. ISDN user parts (ISUPs) and level 3. Here the connection of a trunk group
and a DPC is determined.

Siemens Appendix: Administration of the SS7 Network in EWSD Classic

2.1 Overview SS7 User

The permitted user parts per destination point must be made known in order to
enable distribution of the message signal units (MSU) among the corresponding user
parts, or to send user part MSUs to the corresponding destination points.
The users currently being used are:
l for user channel (trunk) related signaling: ISDN user part (ISUP), TUP and TUP+
l for non traffic channel orientated signaling: SCCP/TCAP for signaling with the IN-
SCP (INAP) or for handling of ISDN supplementary services ISS (e.g.
CCBS/CCNR)
In an EWSD Powernode only the trunk related user parts are created in the CP, the
SSCP is only administered in the SSNC (see chapter about SCCP administration).

2.2 MML Commands for Administration of the Trunk

Related UPs in the CP
Creation of C7 USER
With the help of the CR C7USER MML command, the relevant user name (e.g. ISDN
user part ISUP) is allocated to a destination point code and a network name. The
C7USER of all known DPCs of the own network must be set up here.
As well as setting up, it is also possible to display and cancel the C7USER.

Creation of C7 TGREL
After the trunk related UPs are created, the so called C7TGREL can be entered for
each TRGP.
The C7 trunk group relation (C7TGREL) represents the link between the traffic
orientated user parts e.g. ISDN user part (ISUP) and level 3. Here the linkage of a
trunk group and a DPC is determined, this linkage is required for the "allocation
function"
