Obedience of Parents

The obedience of parents is praiseworthy and admirable, logically, religiously, morally,

ethically, socially, while the disobedience of the parents is regarded blameworthy and bad,
logically, religiously, morally, ethically and socially.

In this article, we will present some quotations from the Holy Qur’an and the sayings of the
Prophet (May peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him).

Penalty for Parental Disobedience

This article in essence intends to bring good news to daughters and sons; girls and boys
young men and women of our time who love and obey their parents and to warn those who
fall short in obeying their parents and fall in the disobedience of their parents. There are
traditions and sayings proving that the obedience of the parents brings the fruits
immediately in this world such as: good health, well-being, success, ease and tranquility in
addition to the fruits in the hereafter such as: the pleasure of Allah the Almighty, enjoyment
in the paradise and the divine bliss, as well as the consequences of disobedience of parents
are immediately in this world such as: the misery in this world, failure, disappointment,
disease, degeneration, absence of spiritual and mental peace, distress, anxiety, and
deprivation of the blessing of children beside the severe consequences in the Hereafter such
as the wrath of Allah the Almighty and torment in hell.
The obedient to the parents is considered esteemed in society and is considered noble,
honorable and moral person among the people, and this is the first reward and prize in this
world before the Hereafter.

The Prophet Isma`eel an Obedient Son

The story of the Prophet Isma`eel with his father; the Prophet Ibraheem (May peace of
Allah and His blessings be upon them) is well-known in Abrahamic religions. The obedient
son accepted to be slaughtered to obey his father when his father was commanded by Allah
the Almighty to do so. However, when the intention was proved to be genuine and sincere
the son was ransomed with a ram from paradise and the son became free and safe due to
the blessing of his obedience to his father. This is the greatest example of devotion and
obedience to parents in the history of mankind. The story of the Prophet Isma`eel and
Ibraheem (peace be upon them) has a great lesson and a precious advice for boys and girls
these days, who behave the parents with less care. The story really demonstrates clearly
how the obedience should be for parents.

The Story of Uwais al-Qarani

In addition, great personalities or the people of Allah the Almighty across the history of
Islam were dedicated to the service of parents. The story of Uwais al-Qarani (594 - 657
A.D.), one of the great figures and friends of Allah the Almighty is exciting and motivating.
Even, the second caliph of Muslims; `Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)
wished to meet him and asked his prayer as was advised by the Prophet Muhammad (May
peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him). Uwais al-Qarani remained in the service of
his sick and old mother though he was eager to travel to see the Prophet Muhammad (May
peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him), but due to his care for his mother, he could
not travel until the Prophet Muhammad (May peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him)
departed from this world. And by the blessing of his mother’s supplication for him, he was
cured from his incurable skin disease.

Obedience of Parents in Qur’an

There are many verses in the Glorious Qur’an in this subject, as well as there are a lot of
sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (May peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him) that
exhort and encourage the obedience for parents, and prohibit their disobedience. Those
references could not be mentioned in this brief and quick article. However, some most
important and authentic references would be mentioned here for benefit of our new and
young generation who does not care for the parents. However, the quotes in this regard are
countless in Islamic sacred texts.

Allah the Almighty says: “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do
good.” (An-Nisa’4:36)

It is noteworthy here that good behavior with the parents came with the worship of Allah
the Almighty that shows clearly the importance of good behavior with parents.
Another blessed verse details the rights of parents specially when they are old and need the
help of sons and daughters. Allah the Almighty says:

“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good
treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so
much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. (23) And lower to
them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they
brought me up [when I was] small.” (24) (Al-Isra’17:23, 24).

This verse bears a gentle advice from Allah the Almighty that touches the heart and
awakens the conscience and emotion, and makes the cruel heart melted for mercy for the
parents. Perhaps, a sensitive and emotional son or daughter will cry when he/she will
imagine the inability, the old age, the weakness of the parents, their need for help as was
mentioned in the verse. Even, Allah the Almighty has prohibited uttering a word of anger for
parents that may show carelessness, intolerance, lack of patience or disrespect by the
daughters or sons.

In addition, Allah the Almighty says:

“Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” (Luqman31:14)

Here, Allah the Almighty commands mankind to become thankful to Allah and to parents as
well.

Obedience and Disobedience of Parents in Hadeeth

We will present some Hadith here on obedience and disobedience of parents.

The Messenger of Allah said: "Three supplications are answered without doubt; the
supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of the
parent for his son."(Reported by At-Tirmizi)

Therefore, daughters and sons are advised to ask for prayer from parents through service,
care and generosity. It is also obligatory to avoid cursing from parents by avoiding
negligence in their rights, avoiding harsh and painful words and avoiding stinginess for
parents.

In addition, the Prophet Muhammad (May peace of Allah and His blessings be upon him)
said: “Allah delays to the Day of Judgment the penalty for whatever sins He chooses except
disobedience of parents, the penalty for which is inflicted by Allah on the doer in this life
before the death.” (Reported by Al Hakim)

This Hadith states clearly that the disobedient son and daughter see the terrible
consequences of disobedience in this world before the Hereafter, as well as the righteous
and obedient son and daughter see reward and good result of their obedience for parents in
this world before the Hereafter.

O son and daughter! If you are disobedient to your parents, you have to hurry to obey them
before it is too late. Return to the obedience of them before spoiling your life and your
hereafter. As you sow so shall you reap.
