CREATING POINTS AND SURFACE

EXERCISE 1: CREATING POINTS (IMPORTING POINTS FROM A TEXT FILE)

1. Click New.
2. In dialog box, browse to folder where you save Autocad Civil 3D (Metric). Click to TEMPLATE
folder. (We will use this template for whole process of Autocad Civil 3D; Surface, Horizontal
Alignment, Vertical Alignment and Cross Section)
Click open.
3. Click Points Tab. Select Import/Export Points Import Points. (If the menubar was not there,
just type at the command line; menubar and enter, then type 1.)

4. In Import Points dialog box:


Click plus (+) sign. Browse to SURVEY DATA folder. Select PENZD POINTS FILE (COMMA
DELIMITED)
In Point File Format, select PENZD (COMMA DELIMITED).
Check Add Points to Point Group. Click . The dialog box-Point File Formats-Create
Group will open. Specify in dialog box:

Existing Topo

In Advance Options: check Do elevation adjustment if possible.


5. Click ok. Then type ZE at the command line to zoom in to imported points.

EXERCISE 2: CREATING A SURFACE

1. In the same dwg file, click Surfaces Tab. Select Create Surface.
2. In Create Surface dialog box, for Type, select TIN surface. Default the layer (C-TOPO)
3. In Properties table, specify the following parameters:
Name: Project Name-EXTG-SRF
Description: Existing Ground surface from imported data
Style: Contours 1m and 5m (Design)
Render Material: By Layer
4. Click Ok.
5. In Toolspace, in Prospector tab, expand the Surfaces collection.
6. In Definition, right click Point Groups. Click Add.
7. In Point Groups dialog box, click Existing Topo. Click ok.
The surface, which contains the imported point data, is displayed in the drawing.

EXERCISE 3: EDIT A SURFACE

1. Click the surface, then right click. Select Edit Surface Style. In the dialog box, go to the
Display and the Triangles should be visible. Then click ok.
Notice that some longer triangles remain and span across corners. These triangles are not
accurate and result the incorrect display of contours.
2. In Surface Tab, in Edit Surface, click Delete Line. Delete the triangulation line that span
across the other corners.
3. Notice that the contours automatically update to reflect the surface changes.
4. You can also control the flow of the contours by swapping the edges of the triangulation
line.
5. In Surface Tab, in Edit Surface, click Swap Edge. Click the line that you wanted to edit the
flow of the contours.
6. Save the changes.
