The Arc de Triomphe Is Perhaps The Most
The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French
Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and
generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldierfrom World War I. The Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the most
iconic of all French monuments, and without a doubt one of the most triumphal. Built
between 1806 and 1836, it’s iconic in style and sculpture to the decoration popular at the
first half of the nineteenth century and visitors can admire its delicate design and
engravings. Instantly recognisable and deeply evocative of the military history of
France, the Arc de Triomphe provides a glimpse into France’s social past as well as
spectacular views across central Paris. The architect, Jean-François Chalgrin, took his
inspiration from the Roman Arch of Titus, with a single arch, but transcended the
original by the outsize dimensions (about 50m high, 45m long and 22m wide) and by
doing away with columns.
