Tutorial 9 PDF

This document contains 3 problems regarding chemical engineering thermodynamics calculations for binary mixtures. Problem 1 involves calculating vapor pressure and composition for an acetone-methanol system using Wilson's equation. Problem 2 involves determining parameters for a chloroform-methanol system using Margules equation and calculating vapor properties. Problem 3 involves calculating activity coefficients at the azeotrope for an acetone-chloroform system using van Laar equation and determining vapor properties in equilibrium with a liquid mixture.

TUTORIAL 9

1. A binary system that contains acetone(1) and methanol(2) is well represented by Wilson
equation as given below:

 12 21 
ln  1   ln  x1  x2 12   x2   
 x1  x2 12 x2  x121 

Determine the total pressure and the vapor phase composition of the system that is in
equilibrium with 30 mole % liquid mixture of acetone at 55°C (328.15 K).

2. For a binary mixture that contains chloroform(l) and methanol(2) at 53.5°C, the system forms an
azeotrope at x1 = 0.645 and P = 101.325 kPa. The binary system is well represented with the
Margules equation as given below:

ln 1  x22  A12  2  A21  A12  x1 

ln 2  x12  A21  2  A12  A21  x2 

a) Determine the parameters A12 and A21 with respect to Margules equation.
b) By using the values in (a), determine the total pressure and the vapor phase composition of
the system that is in equilibrium with 50% mole liquid mixture of chloroform at 53.5°C.

3. In atmospheric pressure, acetone(1) and chloroform(2) form an azeotrope at 64.6oC and

composition x1 = 0.335. The vapor pressure of acetone and chloroform at 64.6oC are 1.31 and
0.98 atm, respectively. The system is well represented by van Laar equation as follow:
2
 A' x 
ln 1  A 1 ' 12 1 
'

 A 21x 2 
2
 A' x 
ln  2  A 21 1 '21 2 
'

 A 12 x1 
Given the relation of activity coefficients with respect to van Laar equation:

2
ln 2 A 12
'
x 
 '  1
ln 1 A 21  x 2 

a) Calculate the activity coefficient of acetone and chloroform at azeotrope.

b) By using values in a), calculate the pressure and composition of vapor phase that is
equilibrium with liquid containing 12 mole % acetone at 64.6oC.
