1) Lino Brocka's film Insiang depicts the oppression and struggles of women in Philippine society through the story of the title character Insiang.
2) Insiang suffers rape at the hands of her mother's boyfriend and is then blamed by her mother for the rape.
3) Throughout the film, Insiang transitions from a naive girl into a strong, independent woman as she seeks revenge against those who have mistreated her. However, the film suggests that true change will only come when women unite to end the culture of harassment and abuse that men perpetuate.

2015-10644 Social Science I Insiang: Bitter Pill of Women and Society Lino Brocka’s film depicts the oppression and the struggles of women in the Philippine society. Insiang the beautiful Filipina leading character is a representation of how women are mistreated and harassed. Pigs squealing and butchering live greets you at the beginning of the film however, I later realized the pigs was somehow an analogy to how unfortunate the lives of the poor and the women in the society; like being butchered by the wealthy and privilege, striping them naked of what remains in their possession and eating them alive. This is how Insiang’s mom (Tonia) did when he got rid of the other family who lives in their house to make room for his boyfriend, Dado, a butcher. Later, the film also focus on the noise and the pollution in the squatters. The struggles Insiang went through after she got raped by her mother’s boyfriend Dado. The prying eyes of the people around Insiang including the lustful desires of men, objectifying women. However, after Insiang’s mother, Tonia, blames her for getting raped by Dado. She took revenge and she no longer plays the naïve and innocent little girl hence she transitions into a strong independent girl. Moreover, she was helped by Narding who also have crush at Insiang and was contented by looking at her from afar. The movie also depicts the machismo excuse of I can’t help it, I’m a man or it’s okay to beat women (Dado in beating Tonia and Insiang) and fondle women in public places (Bebot, Insiang suitor). Insiang may have the last laugh at the end of the film but the truth is no one wins. Men will continue this rape culture and harassment unless women stand and fight till all our voices are heard.
