SQQS1013 Elementary Statistics
Group Assignment 2

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This group assignment covers Chapters 2 to 4 and carries 125 marks (20%)
of your coursework marks.
2. Work in a team of FOUR (4) persons and appoint a leader or as instructed by
your lecturer. (Team diversity often leads to improved work quality.)
3. This assignment contains THREE (3) questions which are divided into TWO
(2) parts. Answer ALL questions and show all calculations clearly in 4 decimal
places or as appropriate.
4. Each team member must participate in completing the whole assignment. The
leader shall report any lack of participation directly to the lecturer for
appropriate actions which may include marks deduction of 1 to 10 marks.
5. Your report must be typed using Arial font size 12; soft copies are preferred –
use the MS Excel file given. Use a meaningful file name e.g. “A172
SQQS1013 GA2 Team A1” – for Team 1 of Group A.
6. The front cover for the report is as in the Appendix.
7. Submission due date for Question 1 (70 marks): Week 6 (Thursday 29
March 2018)
8. Submission due date for Questions 2 and 3 (55 marks): Week 8 (Thursday
12 April 2018)

DATA COLLECTION & SAMPLING:

For data collection purposes, each student is required to answer a questionnaire latest
by Tuesday 6 March 2018 via this link: https://goo.gl/forms/hIMLTlK4825PTVC32

The class (population) data will be provided by your lecturer upon your class completion
in responding to the questionnaire. A Microsoft Excel file containing answering guidance
and instructions to select a random sample of 30 is accessible via this link:

QUESTION 1 (70 MARKS)

This question is structured to guide you on how to organize, analyze, present and
summarize your data to reveal the characteristics of your sample. Think of an
interesting story you could write based on your findings from descriptive statistics. You
are highly encouraged to explore as many variables as you can in order to practice what
you learn and be able to construct one or two good paragraphs at the end of the
question.

a) Identify and describe at least FIVE (5) qualitative variables of interest. For each
variable, identify its level of measurement and its suitable graphical representation.
Then, construct the graphs in Microsoft Excel.
(Note: Make sure that at a minimum (you can do more) FIVE (5) types of graph are
included, each for a different variable.)
(20 marks)
b) Now, identify at least THREE (3) quantitative variables. For each variable, identify
its level of measurement and answer the following questions:

i. Construct a suitable frequency table that summarize at least ONE (1) of the
variables (Variable #1). (4 marks)

ii. Using your answer in (i), build a histogram. Comment on the shape obtained from
the histogram. (4 marks)

iii. Compute the following statistics: arithmetic mean, mode, median; standard
deviation; and skewness. Comment on the distribution of the data, its measurement
of central tendency and measurement of dispersion.

(12
marks)
iv. Construct a box-plot for another variable (Variable #2) and interpret the values of the
Q1, median, Q3 and IQR. Describe the shape of the distribution and identify any
outliers from the data. What would be the best location statistic to be used when
there are outliers in the data? Why? (13 marks)

v. Construct an ogive (Variable #3), estimate and interpret the value of the median.
(7
marks)

c) Now, based on your earlier findings in parts (a) and (b), write one or two paragraphs
to describe some interesting story about your sample data. Is it appropriate to
generalize the conclusions of your sample to the whole class (population)? Why or
why not?
(10 marks)

QUESTION 2 (33 MARKS)

a) Social media are forms of electronic communication through which users create
online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other
contents. Based on your sample data, suppose we are interested in the following
social media used by the students: Facebook (FB), Instagram (IG) and Twitter (T).
Answer the following questions.

i. Find (6 marks)

ii. Compute (2 marks)

iii. Find , then draw a Venn diagram and show all respective
probability values.
(4 marks)

iv. Find P . (2 marks)

b) The amount of time spent on social media may vary depending on many factors.
(You may choose another similar variable e.g. duration of sleep or duration of
exercise/ sports activities, but subject to agreement by your lecturer). Let A, B and
C be the events that are based on an interval of daily interaction time with social
media.(Your lecturer may advise on different values of interval depending on your
selected variable)
A: Less than 6 hours
B: More than 1 hour, but less than or equal to 4 hours
C: More than 4 hours

i. Using your sample data, compute P(A), P(B) and P(C).

(3
marks)

ii. Using your answers in part (i), find the probability that a randomly selected
student spends 6 hours or more on social media daily.
(2 marks)

iii. Using your answers in part (i), find the probability that a randomly selected
student spends 4 hours or less interacting with social media daily.

marks)
iv. Using some of your earlier answers in parts (a) and (b), write a short paragraph
to describe about your class usage and interaction with social media.
(3 marks)

c) Let’s say we are interested in these smartphone brands only: Samsung, Oppo and
Apple as used by the students of this class. (You may choose laptop brands or other
similar variables too, but subject to agreement by your lecturer). Suppose two
students are randomly selected from your sample data.

i. Draw a complete probability tree diagram to illustrate the selection. (5 marks)

ii. Let X be the number of Samsung users. What is the probability that at least one
selected phone is a Samsung? (2 marks)

iii. Interpret your answer in part (ii). (2 marks)

QUESTION 3 (22 MARKS)

Let X be the number of siblings based on your sample data. (You may choose another
similar variable, but subject to agreement by your lecturer). Answer the following
questions:

a) Construct a cumulative probability distribution. (5 marks)

b) Compute the mean and interpret its meaning. (3 marks)

c) Compute the standard deviation and interpret its meaning. (5 marks)

d) Find the probability that the number of siblings is at least three. (3 marks)

e) Find the probability that the number of siblings is less than one. (3 marks)

f) Comment your answers in (d) and (e) and relate them to your answer in part (b).
