Data processing:

Meaning, origin, types software used, careers in data processing, importance of data

processing.

1. Meaning of data processing: Wikipedia defines data processing as the

collection and manipulation of items of data to produce meaningful

information. It is the strategic and collective manipulation of data using proper

algorithms to derive comprehensive information from structured and

unstructured data.

2. Data and Information: Data (datum) is the term used to describe basic facts

about a student, a teacher or a human. Such facts include age, height, weight,

name, etc. INFORMATION is the definition of collected data to form a

knowledge base. It is the interpretation of data to represent a record. Such

information involve the details of a student. This is found in the student

register.

Data Processing Types

There are three generally classified data processing types:

1. Manual Data Processing: this involves the use of traditional method of pen,

paper, file cabinets and human brain to process data. It consumes time, and

introduces error into the record if the work is in large volume.


2. Mechanical Data Processing: these are data processing techniques, using

non-programmable device machines. Typewriters, calculators and other

mechanical devices are examples of this class of data processing type.

3. Electronic Data Processing (EDP): this is the modern day data processing

method. It involves the use of computers (digital means). It is programmable

and runs with the power of programming languages. A good example is

Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access.
