The Era of Silent Films

The first time an audience saw a film was on 28th December, 1895, in Paris. Two
brothers, Auguste and Louis Lumière, showed ten short films that they made. The
films showed scenes of everyday life. This was the beginning of the film industry. By
1915, filmmakers were producing films of many different genres. There were dramas,
romances, comedies, westerns and horror films. The most famous actors from this
time were Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Lon Chaney. But perhaps the most
interesting fact about the first films is that before 1929 they didn’t have any sound at
all.
So, how did the people in the audience know what the film was about? First of all,
they read signs which appeared between the scenes and explained the story. Also,
the actors and actresses exaggerated their body language and facial expressions to
show how the characters felt. Finally, a piano player accompanied the film with music
that fit the story line.
Filmmakers produced thousands of silent films between 1915 and 1929, but
unfortunately 80 – 90% of these films no longer exist. The era of silent films ended in
1929, when filmmakers began to make “talkies” – films with sound. Some actors, like
Charlie Chaplin, continued to make silent films, but audiences were no longer
satisfied with silent films and by 1936 all films became “talkies”.
