Learning Contract

This learning contract outlines the purpose of the clinical internship, learning outcomes, and performance criteria as relevant to
the student’s identified focus of study. The contract should be used by the student and clinical preceptor(s) to identify clinical
practice procedures and experiences in which the student should participate, in order to facilitate and satisfy the overall
purpose and leaning outcomes, as detailed in the body of the learning contract.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After completing this clinical internship, senior student will be able to;
1. To demonstrate application of strategies for initiating, managing and weaning ventilatory support
facilitating liberation from mechanical ventilation.
2. Demonstrate effective communication with healthcare professionals to facilitate and plan appropriate care
interventions
3. Evaluate clinical data to include, but not limited to ventilator data, hematology and metabolic data
findings, as applicable to patient assessment and planning of care.
4. Demonstrate application of airway management techniques, as relevant to insertion and maintenance of
artificial airways

5. Demonstrate the ability to administering basic and advanced therapeutics as relevant to managing
patient’s clinical presentation.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA: These criteria should be used by the clinical preceptor(s) and the student as a guide in planning
activities that should be completed during the clinical internship. These activities are intended to demonstrate student’s
participation in experiences that facilitate competency development, as applicable to the practice setting and achievement of
learning outcomes.

A. UNDERTAKING OF PRECEPTOR(S):
1. Supervise learning activities of student in accordance with institutional and departmental policy and
procedure, state licensure requirements, and healthcare regulatory standards.
2. Instruct student learning as guided by departmental standards of practice, American Association of
Respiratory Care (AARC) Clinical Practice Guidelines, and other applicable professional guidelines/standards
of practice.
3. Plan, facilitate, and monitor student’s performance, to include student’s assigned work schedule/shift and
daily activities.
4. Serve as resource to assist student with acquiring educational opportunities and clinical experiences
relevant to learning outcomes identified in this contract.
5. Role-model professional behavior and ethical conduct in provision of patient care and interdisciplinary
interaction.
6. Assess/validate competence in accordance with learning objectives and/or performance criteria;
institutional and/or Baptist College competency validation tools (available in Trajecsys, clinical management
system) should be used to determine competence.
7. Evaluate student’s performance, using the evaluation tool provided by the Program (available in Trajecsys,
clinical management system).

B. UNDERTAKING OF STUDENT:
1. Comply with institutional and departmental policies/procedures and healthcare regulatory standards, as
applicable to the performance of assigned duties.
2. Adhere to instructions provided by preceptor(s); seek clarification as needed to ensure quality performance
and minimize risks of performance-related incidents.
3. Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in the provision of patient care and interprofessional
interactions.
4. Participate in learning activities relevant to focus of study (e.g., physician/multidisciplinary rounds,
aggregation of quality improvement data, staff meetings, patient/family teaching).
5. Satisfactorily perform procedures as outlined in the performance criteria section of the Learning Contract.
6. Document learning and performance activities in accordance with Baptist College using Trajecsys, clinical
management system.
7. Document daily narratives detailing how activities align with satisfying identified learning outcomes, to
include cognitive and psychomotor domains of learning.
8. Evaluate preceptor(s)’s performance as relevant to facilitating clinical internship.
