English for specific purposes is an approach of teaching English for specific purposes or
help the student to enhance their English abilities for specific careers or comes from the student
who studying it for a specific reason and because of some need. ESP focuses on language
teaching in specific context for examples English for Academic Purposes (EVP), Business
English, Science, Engineering , and the other. ESP is different from GE(general English).
General English is used because of liability and taught in school, have syllabus planned, and
learned about the learner don’t have any specific need to learn English. It means that GE can
cover all the skills of English while ESP focus on the learner’s needs.
The history of ESP itself it begins from the end of the Second World War with the
expansion of science, technology and economics. For those reasons English became a language
used to master the three factors that developed at that time. The revolution in linguistics change
of the way from language as a form and defining the futures to language used in real
communication, so it possible to design the language courses that suit for different amd specific
context. ESP has growth in educational psychology. It focus on the ways in which learners
acquire language based on their motivations and needs.
There are three approaches ESP course design. First, language centered approach. This is
a simplest one that particularly common in ESP. It focus on the language that will be thought to
the learner without find the background knowledge, purpose and methodology. Second, skill
centered approach. The purpose of this approach is to help the learners for developing skills and
performance. The last is learning centered approach. It’s combination of language and skill
aspect. Learning is totally determined by the learner. This approach should analyze the
background knowledge of the learner, purpose and methodology that suitable for the learner. It
means that learner’s need is an important role on this approach.
