Course Outcomes and Topics:
Design of simple floor and roof systems and load bearing walls; uses of building materials; fundamentals of design of metal form decking, steel joists, masonry (e.g., beams, columns and load bearing walls), and timber (e.g., beams, trusses, and mechanical connections). Specific outcomes for this technical elective course – students will: Be able to describe the unique material aspects of wood and wood-based components. Be able to explain the structural behavior of wood components subjected to loads. Develop technical competence in single-member wood design procedures. Develop technical competence in steel roof and floor deck system design procedures. Develop technical competence in steel joist design procedures. Be able to describe the engineering properties of materials for masonry construction. Be able to explain the structural behavior of load-bearing unreinforced and reinforced masonry walls subjected to gravity and wind, and reinforced masonry beams and columns under gravity loads; develop technical competence in strength design for masonry.

Office Hours: Prof. Liu: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 10:00 – 11:00 AM, or by appointment Teaching Assistant: to be announced (see course website) Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly. Practice problems may also be suggested periodically, but will not be collected or graded. Assignments should be done neatly and submitted on engineering paper, with final solutions clearly summarized and marked. Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the lecture on the date due. Late assignments will not be accepted, unless a specific arrangement has been made with the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the due date. The lowest homework grade will be dropped.
Exams and Grading:
There will be two mid-term exams and a non-comprehensive final. There will be no make- up exams unless arrangements have been made at least one week in advance. Your final course grade will be determined as follows: midterm exams 25% each, final exam 25%, homework, participation, other 25%.
