Prin Comms Prob Set PM and FM

The document contains solutions to 8 problems related to frequency modulation and phase modulation. Problem 1 calculates the deviation sensitivity of a frequency modulator. Problem 2 does the same for a phase modulator. Problem 3 calculates the peak frequency deviation, carrier swing, and modulation index for an FM signal. Problem 4 calculates the peak phase deviation for a PM signal. Problem 5 determines the percentage modulation of a television carrier. Problems 6, 7 and 8 solve for deviation ratio, bandwidth, and peak phase deviation respectively for given modulation scenarios.

Problem No. 1

Problem No.1 If a frequency modulator produces 5 kHz of frequency deviation for a 10-
V modulating signal, determine the deviation sensitivity. How much frequency deviation is
produced for a 2-V modulating signal?

SOLUTION:
δ = 5khz

Vm=10V

Kfm= δ / Vm

= 5khz/10V Kfm= 0.5 khz/V

If Em= 2V

δ=?

= (Kfm)(Vm)

= (0.5khz/V)(2V)
δ = 1 khz

Problem No. 2

Problem No.2 If a phase modulator produces 2 rad of phase deviation for a 5-V
modulating signal, determine the deviation sensitivity. How much phase deviation would a 2-V
modulating signal produce?

SOLUTION:

m = Φ =2rad
Vm= 5V

Kfm= φ /Vm

= 2rad/5V

Kfm= 0.4rad/V
If Vm=2V

φ=?

= (Kfm)(Vm)

= (0.4rad/V)(2V)
Φ= 0.8 rad

Problem No. 3

Problem No.3 Determine (a) the peak frequency deviation, (b) the carrier swing, and
(c) the modulation index for an FM modulator with deviation sensitivity K1 = 4 kHz/V and a
modulating signal vm(t) = 10 sin(2π2000t). What is the peak frequency deviation produced if
the modulating signal were to double in amplitude?

SOLUTION:

Vm=10V

Kfm = 4khz/V

fm= 2khz

a). δ= (Kfm)(Vm) = (4khz/V )(10V)

δ= 40 khz

b.) carrier swing= 2δ

2δ = 2(40khz)
= 80khz If signal were to double in amplitude:
δ = (4khz)(20V)
c.) m= δ/fm δ = 80khz
= 40 khz/2khz m=20

Problem No. 4
Problem No.4 Determine the peak phase deviation for a PM modulator with a deviation
sensitivity K = 1.5 rad/V and a modulating signal vm(t) = 2 sin(2π2000t). How much phase
deviation is produced for a modulating signal with twice the amplitude?

SOLUTION:

Vm= 2 V If the amplitude is twice

K= 1.5 rad/V φ = 1.5rad (4V)
fm = 2 kHz φ =6 rad
φ= 1.5 rad/V (2V)
φ= 3 rad

Problem No. 5

Problem No.5 Determine me percent modulation for a television broadcast station with a
maximum frequency deviation δ = 50 kHz when the modulating signal produces 40 kHz of
frequency deviation at the antenna. How much deviation is required to reach 100% modulation
of the carrier?

SOLUTION:

δ max = 10 kHz
δ actual = 2 kHz
% modulation =?
(δ max / δ actual ) x 100
= 40 kHz/ 50kHz x 100
= 80 %

To reach 100% modulation

δ actual= 100 (50 kHz) / 100
= 50 kHz

Problem No. 6 Determine the deviation ratio and worst-case bandwidth for an FM signal
with a maximum frequency deviation δ = 25 kHz and a maximum modulating signal fm(max) =
12.5 kHz.

SOLUTION:

δmax= 20 kHz

fm(max) = 12.5 kHz.

DR= δfmax / fm(max)

DR = 2

Worst case = 2[δfmax + fm(max)]

= 2(25+12.5) = 75khz

Problem#1

Problem No.7 If a phase modulator produces 1,5 rad of phase deviation for a 5-Vp
modulating signal, determine the deviation sensitivity

SOLUTION:
φ = 1.5 rad

Vm= 5 Vp
Kfm= φ/Vm

= 1.5rad / 5V Kfm=0.3rad/V

Problem#2

Problem No.8 Determine the peak phase deviation for a PM modulator with deviation
sensitivity K = 2 rad/V and a modulating signal vm = 4 sin(2π1000t).

SOLUTION:
Kfm= 2rad/V
Vm= 4V
φ= (Kfm)(Vm)
=( 2 rad/V) (4V)
φ = 8 rad
