Introduction

A. Background

Literature is everything comes from the results of thought, sight, hearing and feeling
which is then poured into the creative and beautiful, which in turn can be amusing, give
information and enjoyed by readers.

One of the important things to be discussed in Literature is Urban Literature. Urban

Literature as the kinds of works that deal with urban social life or the focus of this literary
work are settled in the city and its some aspects that cannot .

According to Alter 2005, the main points that can one learn from reading the novels, or
understanding an urban literary works of the era are through the aspect in the urban social
about class relation , the social mobility, social inequality.

The great expectations is a 1964 british film directed by david lean, based on novel Charles
Dickens and starring John mills, bernard miles, finley currie, jean simmons, martita hunt, alec
guinness, and valerie hobson. Its film now regarded as one of lean’s Best in 1999, on british
institute’s top 100 british film list, great expectations was named the 5th greatest british all
the time.

Charles Dickens is one of the great names in the history of English literature. It was a great
name in Victorian times in the 19th century where Britain was in its heyday under the reign
of Queen Victoria from 1832 to 1901. Britain has many colonies and industrial developments
of affluent status today. Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, on February 7, 1812. He was
the first child of eight children. He married Catherine Hogarth, son of a newspaper editor in
London in 1836 and had 10 children. Dickens died of a brain disease in June 1870. He was
buried at Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, London. This section will briefly describe the
social situation of Britain in the nineteenth century, then continued with an explanation of
Dickens' social critique of the British social situation at that time in his Great Expectations.
which tells where the pip is trying to be a gentlemen (a man with high-class status and a
luxurious joke).
B. Discussion

1.Social mobility

Social mobility is a movement of a person or group of members of the community of

social status one to the social status of the other in a social structures in society. A social
movement is going on in this movie the movie is significant enough to explain that as the pip
progresses and the jaggers come back to his residence that a philanthropist gives his money to
pip to be a “gentleman” in London, after that pip goes to London to change his life for the
better, and elevate his status, and we can see the immigration to improve its status for the better.

At minute 44.36

Goodby !

Good bye, joe

In the picture we can see pip say goodbye to joe and biddy to go kelondon and become
“Gentleman”.
2.Class relation (seoconomic status)

Class relationin this film tells a lot about classroom social situations that occur between
upper and lower classes (working class) as, when the existence of workers creates based on
authority, wealth, power, educational lifestyle, and polotics.Lower class people also can not
improve their welfare to a higher level in the economic aspect. This happens because the
workers and the middle class have no right in politics. To get into politics requires education
that is reserved for the upper classes, so that the working class does not have access to it.
Poverty becomes like a fixed destiny that can not be changed. Thus, the desire of young
people from the bottom is imagining to taste the life of the British elite at that time that is
attached to the luxury. just as pip does in order to get an education he is willing to take a
night class held by a biddy or attend a night class held by a different country with a high class
who can easily get an education. and also he came home miss havisham to play cards there
we can see the upscale relationships that invite the lower classes but instead get insult from
estella, and also change his opinion of his wishes who want to become a blacksmith turns into

a gentleman (a man of upper class or living luxury).

come nearer. Let me look at you

In that picture we can see miss havisham calling the pip to come up themed, here the social
relations of the lower classes and above dpat relate to what miss havisham do to tutul pip
kerumahnya and playing cards with estella and got insults from estella, this shows lower class
too arrogant and easy to humore others.

3.Social inequality

Social inequality is Typicall urban social life. this film tells about city life experienced by
pip and social life that begins on his desire to be a 'gentleman' in order to be equivalent to
Estella representing the social inequalities of the period. The working-class lifestyle depicted
'haphazardly' by Estella when she was asked to describe Pip. Estella insulted Pip's social
status from her lifestyle and clothes. He describes Pip's rugged hands as helping his uncle as a
blacksmith, his unfit shoes, and his 'very unclassy'.
At the minute 34.38

Biddy, I want to be a gentleman.

A genteleman ?

from the words of the pip to the biddy we can see the desire of pip to become a gentleman
because of the estela that insult his appearance is not classy because of its social status, and
also the desire to be able to live better and classy.
Conclusion

this film can we conclude the life of piping that can be a gentleman can be ours to be
someone who is respected or raised its degree it is not easy to obtain because full of effort
and sacrifice is not as easy as we, can meaning, especially life very when it is very easy for
bwah class for a top class case. The moral value that can be derived from this work is the
social value that prevails in society does not mean the most correct and appropriate value
with humanity. The structure of society at that time depicted full of hypocrisy, so that the
value of the essence of life becomes faded. The film also conveys the element of love and family
as the most important part of life. Wealth, prosperity, and happiness are not measured by social
status. It can be equally earned for the working class though
