ASSIGNMENT 1

QUESTION 1
a) Relative volatility is defined as
y1 x1
12 
y 2 x2

For binary system that obeys modified Raoult’s law, prove that the relative volatility at x1 =
0 and x1 = 1 are as follow:

P1sat exp  A  P1sat

12 x 0  12 x 1 

b) For a binary system of acetone(1) and methanol(2) at 320.15 K, the activity coefficients
are correlated by the following equations:

ln 1  0.98x 22 ln 2  0.98x 12

i) From part a), show that azeotrope exists at 320.15 K.

QUESTION 2
A stream containing a mixture of pentane(1), n-hexane(2) and heptane(3) with flow rate of
80 kmol/h, 100 kmol/h and 120 kmol/h, respectively is fed to a flash separator operating at
350 K and 1.2 bar. By assuming Raoult’s law, determine the flow rates of vapor and liquid
formed and its compositions. The Antoine parameters for each component are given in the
following table.

Parameters for Antoine Equation
