Q.1 The design tensile strength of a member due to yielding of gross section, Tdg is
given by 1
(c) Agfy/m0
Solution: Cl. 6.2, IS 800: 2007.
Q.2 The design tensile strength of a plate due to rupture of critical section is given
by 1
(a) 0.9Anfu/m1
Q.3 The slenderness ratio for a member if always in tension (other than pre-
tensioned member) is 1
(b) 400
Solution: Table 3, IS 800: 2007
Q.4 A plate used for connecting two or more structural members intersecting each
other is 1
(c) Gusset plate
Q.6 The shear lag width for ISA 75X75X10 is (Assume gauge distance = 40 mm) 2
(b) 105 mm
Solution: The length of outstanding leg will be w = 75 mm and w1 = 40 mm.
So the shear lag width, bs = w + w1 – t = 75 + 40 – 10 = 105 mm.
Q.7 A single angle section 90X60X10 is connected with gusset plate with 7 bolts of 20
mm diameter in one line at pitch of 50 mm and edge distance of 30 mm. What is
the design tensile strength of the section for rupture of net section? (Assume the
section is connected with longer leg and gauge distance = 50 mm) 4
(a) 349 kN
Solution: Anc = (90 - 10/2 - 22) × 10 = 630 mm2
Ago = (60 - 10/2) × 10 = 550 mm2
An = 630 + 550 = 1180 mm2
The length of outstanding leg will be w = 60 mm and w1 = 50 mm.
So the shear lag width, bs = w + w1 – t = 60 + 50 – 10 = 100 mm.
Distance between end bolts , Lc = 6 × 50 = 300 mm.

Q.8 A single ISA 75 × 50 × 8 is connected (longer leg) with gusset plate using use 4
bolts of 20 mm diameter in one line at pitch of 50 mm and edge distance of 30
mm. What is the Design tensile strength due to block shear failure? (Assume
gauge distance = 35 mm) 4
(c) 213 kN
Solution:
Avg = 8 × (3 × 50 + 30) = 1440 mm2
Avn = 8 × (3 × 50 + 30 – 3.5 × 22) = 824 mm2
Atg = 8 × 40 = 320 mm2 [assuming gauge g = 35 for 75 mm leg]
Atn = 8 × (40 – 0.5 × 22) = 232 mm2

Solution: Force resisted by weld at lower side of angle P1 = 300 × = 216.33 kN
90
25.1
Force resisted by weld at upper side of angle P2 = 300 × = 83.67 kN
90
Assuming size of weld as 5mm, the throat thickness te will be 0.707 × 5 = 3.535 mm

Length required at lower side Lw1 = 𝑡𝑒 𝑓𝑢 = 3.535×410 = 323.15 mm ≈ 324 mm
