The correct height is whatever hight you want it to be ...

And when in paperspace the scale doesn t matter because paperspace

' (

should always be 1 1 : ).

a fairly easy system to remember is double the scale to get the height make
: " " ...

your text 200 for 1 100 similarly for any metric scale 1 10 text 20 that
: ..... .... : , = ....

would be correct for our office

" "

(we also just invert the imperial scale factors 1 4 1 would call for 4 text
..... / " = ' "

height easy to remember and we get consistent text heights across all
.....

viewports and from all staff )

others will disagree and have other standards but it works well for us

1/8 text height in metric would be 3.175 mm @ 1:1 scale. Do the math. How hard is
this I don t understand the education system if people can t do a simple ratio
? ' '

conversion Is this type of question laziness or incompetence Do you even know

many mm are in an inch and vice versa ?

Aren t you the Paranoid Schizophrenic If you look closely my post was to the OP

not to you My response is directly below yours not indented like this one will be

when I select Post Message Oh I also noticed there is a quaint feature called the

your haste to chastise someone you must have missed that right Now I must ask

you Who is the professional

I don t think my post was rude sarcastic or otherwise I provided a link to a useful
' .

site for length conversion I did give the correct metric text height commonly used
.

in drafting 1 8th at 1 1 scale I also offered advice if the OP didn t feel purchasing
( / ) : . , '

the most simplistic tools calculator of the drafting or engineering trade were
( )

necessary Conversion from imperial to metric is a simple task which most math
.

oriented professionals should be able to accomplish I did ask a poignant question .

as to the education techniques and levels of those in the drafting field .

Upon further reading your solution was the most unprofessional You basically
, .

threw normal accepted drafting convention to the wind and contended any size is
, ,

appropriate as long as it is consistant This is just not the case I would be in error
, . .

if I directed my staff to use 1 or 1 64 text height for all documents based on

" / "

convenience and not presentation value or adherence to reviewing authority

guidelines Just because it is close enough and easy to remember doesn t make
. " " '

it right .

By your method you are basicaly using text somewhere in between 1 16 and 1 8
, / " / "

but not consistantly 3 32 when used at larger scales Boy that makes sense to
/ " . ,

me What was I thinking

smjgsmith

I never heard of line wt determining text height Out of curiosity where did you
. ,

get this information I would be very interested in knowing as it seems very

?

logical My only concern would be in civil design the existing information is

. ,

usually a thinner lw than the proposed Would that mean there would be two
.

different text heights I could imagine it would work very well for cover pages and

etc as a general rule .

It came from an old Australian standard SAA MH2 Metric Data For Building
Designers It was mainly based on pen thickness and available lettering stencils
. .

I just checked AS1100 1 Technical Drawing and it recommends the following

. :-

For A0 B1 sheet sizes

&

Titles drawing numbers 7 0mm

& - .

Subtitles headings view section designations 5 0mm

, , & - .

General notes material lists dimensions 3 5mm

Titles drawing numbers 5 0mm

& - .

Subtitles headings view section designations 3 5mm

, , & - .

General notes material lists dimensions 2 5mm

These sizes are for uppercase For lower case combinations it recommends going
.

one size larger than specified .

your reply was a way to calc text height in model space, and appeared to
assume a desired plotted height of 2mm ...

but what do I know ? :)

Re What is the correct text height in Paper space for 1 100 scale
: :

metric
He may be a student or someone trying to teach themselves the tool How many
, .

posting here used a cheat sheet when they were starting out before they learned
,

the ratio??

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the text is in Paperspace make it the height you want it to plot like 4mm
, , .
If the text is in Modelspace bad idea in my most humble opinion and you want it
( )
to plot 4mm high then you need to think about it a little
;
Concept :
If the plot scale is 1 100 you re shrinking everything by a factor of 100 to fit it on
: '
the plot right So to end up with text that is 4mm high you have to start with text
, ?
that s 400mm high 4x100 400
' =
Scale of 1 25 ending with 4mm text needs to start with 100mm text 4x25 100
: =
Scale of 1 50 ending with 4mm text needs to start with 200mm text 4x50 200
: =
Scale of 1 200 ending with 4mm text needs to start with 800mm text 4x200 800
: =
Now if you want your text to plot at some other height like 2 5 .
Scale of 1 100 ending with 2 5mm text needs to start with 250mm text 2 5x100 250
: . . =
Scale of 1 25 ending with 2 5mm text needs to start with 62 5mm text 2 5x25 62 5
: . . . = .
I d use 63 but that s me
( ' , ' )
Scale of 1 50 ending with 2 5mm text needs to start with 125mm text 2 5x50 125
: . . =
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Imperial units are a little flakier because the factor isn t readily visible in the scale ' .

1 4 1 0 is the same as 1 4 12 is the same as 1 48 or mathematically 12 0 25

/ " = '- " / " = " : , / .

= 48
So on a drawing with a scale of 1 4 12 you want a plotted text height of 1 8 / " = " / "

you need to start at 6 high 0 125x48 6 " ( . = )

Scale 1 2 1 0 12 0 5 24 ending with 1 8 text needs to start with 3 high text

/ " = '- " ( / . = ) / " "

0 125x24 3
. =

Scale 3 8 1 0 12 0 375 32 ending with 1 8 text needs to start with 4 high

/ " = '- " ( / . = ) / " "

text 0 125x32 4
. =

Now if you prefer plotted text at 1 10 inch like we do / ( )

Scale 1 2 1 0 12 0 5 24 ending with 1 10 text needs to start with 2 4 high

/ " = '- " ( / . = ) / " . "

text 0 1x24 2 4
. = .

Scale 3 8 1 0 12 0 5 32 ending with 1 10 text needs to start with 3 2 high

/ " = '- " ( / . = ) / " . "

text 0 1x32 3 2
. = .

Scale 1 4 1 0 12 0 25 48 ending with 1 10 text needs to start with 4 8 high

/ " = '- " ( / . = ) / " . "

text 0 1x48 4 8
. = .

Can t we all just get along Simply find the standard recommended text height for

paper drafting for your country region in question there should be several for

what text height you want it to appear in paperspace Simple yesno

Re What is the correct text height in Paper space for 1 100 scale

Yes Otherwise the OP would take that paper space height and apply the scale
.

factor of each viewport to get the correct height to make it in modelspace --

probably creating a layer for each different scaled instance For example to view
. ,

properly in a 1 4 1 0 viewport the scale difference would be 48 so in order to

/ " = '- " , ,

view the text at 3 32 in paperspace it would have to be 3x48 32 or 4 5 high in

/ " , ( )/ , . "

modelspace Simple yesno

. , ?

1/4" = 1'-0" means 1/4" = 12", or (4x1)/4 = (4x12), or 4/4 = 48, or 1 = 48

I hope my info was useful but if by some odd chance it actually solved your issue
