Ict 2

The document discusses computer networks and communication. It defines a computer network as a system of interconnected computers and devices that allows sharing of data, programs, hardware, and facilitates communication. It also discusses mobile computing, defining it as using wireless technology to connect to centralized information from portable devices. The document outlines different types of networks including personal area networks (PANs), virtual private networks (VPNs), wireless local area networks (WLANs), and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) networks. It concludes that mobile computing brings a new paradigm of distributed computing through wireless connectivity that impacts systems design and data management.

1.0 Introduction
 Computer network is a system of interconnected computers and
peripheral devices.
 Computer communications is a process in which two or more
computers or devices transfer data, instructions, and information.
1.1 Importance of computer networks and communications.
 Sharing data and information
 Sharing of program/software
 Sharing hardware such as printer
 Computer network provide communication possibilities faster than

other facilities.
 Computer networks allow the user to access remote programs and
remoter databases either of the same organization or form other
enterprises or public sources.
 Facilitating communications- Using a network, people communicate

efficiently and easily via email. Instant messaging, chats rooms, cideo
telephones calls, video conferencing, Internet telephony, wireless
messaging services and groupware.
2.0 Mobile Computing
2.1 Definition of Mobile Computing
 Mobile computing is a generic term used to describe the ability

to use technology to wirelessly connect to and use centrally

located information and application software via small portable
and wireless computing and communication devices.
2.2 Specification, services, and frequencies of Mobile Computing
PDA
Specification 1. A mobile device which functions as
a personal information manager and
has the ability to connect to the
internet
2. Has an electronic visual display
enabling it to include a web
browser, but some newer models
also have audio capabilities,
enabling them to be used as mobile
phones or portable media players.
3. It was first used on January 7, 1992,
by Apple Computer, CEO, and John
Sculley at the Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas, Nevada,
referring to the Apple the Apple
Newton.

3.0 Internet Technology and Services
3.1 VoIP
 VoIP is short form of Voice over Internet Protocol.
 It is a general term for a family of methodologies, communication
protocols, and transmission technologies for delivery of voice
communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP)
networks, such as the Internet.
3.2 BLOG
 A blog is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually
maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary,
descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries
are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be
used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
 Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even
message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that
distinguishes them from other static websites.
4.0 Types of network
4.1 PAN
 PAN is the short form of the Personal Area Network. It is a
computer network used for communication among computer
devices including PCs, laptops, printers, telephones and more,
close to one person.
4.2 VPN
 VPN is the short form of Virtual Private Network. It is meaning

a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure,

such as the Internet , to remote offices or individuals with
secure access to their organisation’s pricate network.
4.3 WLAN
 WLAN means Wireless Local Area Network. Is a type of LAN
that uses high frequency radio waves to communicate between
nodes.
 WLAN improves user mobility, speed and scalability to move
around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to
network.
4.4 WIMAX
 WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access),

is the industry term for broadband wireless access network and

it also is a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
technology that will connect WiFi hotspots to the Internet and
provides a wireless extension to cable and DSLofor larger
broadband access.

5.0 Conclusion
Mobile computing (like the peer to peer transaction model did) brings about a
new paradigm of distributed computing in which communication may be achieved
through wireless networks and users can compute even as they relocate from one support
environment to another. The impact of mobile computing on systems design goes beyond
the networking level and directly effects data management. Although being a relatively
new area, mobile data management has attracted a lot of research efforts, motivated by
both a great market potential and by many challenging research problems.
