Learning Contract
Rationale:
This learning contract is designed for a student who may be absent for a significant portion of our unit
on Newton’s Laws of Motion. Many times this applies to a student who enrolled late in the school year. The
district that I work in has a high rate of transiency at the beginning of the year. This can be chaotic for both the
teacher and the student! Our district teaches Physical Science in 9 th grade, while neighboring districts teach
either Biology or Earth Science. Jumping from a one science discipline to another can be difficult for anyone,
but especially is the learner is struggling or advanced. For struggling learners, the task of catching up to the
rest of the class can be daunting and seem insurmountable. For the advanced learner, waiting for the rest of
the class to “catch up” to them can be boring and lead to disruptive behavior. To alleviate student frustration, I
will provide a learning contract for students to catch up on missed work, but also reinforce basic skills that
were practiced and reviewed during the first two weeks of the school year. This contract will also aid me in
assessing where the student is academically as they progress through the work and determine their
appropriate readiness level. Through a variety of different assignments, I will be able to determine what the
