Speed vs. Series Rotor Resistance

A higher series rotor resistance is necessary during starting to limit the speed of the induction motor. As shown in the graph, increasing the series rotor resistance decreases the motor speed. Reversing any two phases of a three-phase induction motor also reverses the direction of its rotation by changing the phase sequence.

4. Why does interchanging any two phases change the direction of rotation of the machine?
Switching of the two phases reverses the sequence of the three phase motor.

5. Describe how changes in mechanical load affected the operation of the Induction Motor.

As the mechanical load increases, the motor’s speed decreases.

6. Describe what disconnecting one and all rotor phases does to the operation of the induction motor.
