Course Objective
The student can judge differences and specific approaches of Corporate Strategy
formulation and Implementation.

Introduction to Strategic, Concept of strategy: Defining strategy, Levels at which strategy operates,
Strategic Decision Making and Approaches to Strategic Decision making, essence of strategic thinking,
replacing planning with strategic thinking, strategic management process. Mission and Purpose,
Objectives and Goals, Strategic Business Units.
Meaning and importance of Corporate Strategy, Environment Analysis and Diagnosis - Concept of
Environment and its components, Environment scanning and appraisal, organizational appraisal,
Strategic advantage analysis and diagnosis, Mergers and acquisitions, geographic diversification,
globalization, the role of the center in corporate strategy
Case Study- The Walt Disney Company: A Corporate Strategy Analysis
Unit-II
Strategy Formulation and Choice of Alternatives: Grand Strategies –Stability, growth, retrenchment
& combination strategies- Modernization, Diversification, Integration, Merger, Take-over and Joint
Venture strategies, Turnaround – divestment and Liquidation strategies. Strategies for competing in
globalizing markets
Process of Strategic Choice – Gap analysis. Industry analysis, competitor analysis - Porter’s Five forces

NOTE FOR THE PAPER SETTER
The syllabus has been divided into three units. Paper setter will set 3 questions from each
unit and 1 compulsory question spread over the whole syllabus consisting of 5 short answer
questions. Compulsory question will be placed at number one. Candidate shall be required to
attempt 6 questions in all including compulsory question and selecting not more than 2
questions from each unit. All questions carry equal marks.
