Homework 2: ME414 Energy Conversion Technologies

This document summarizes the solution to Problem 1 from Homework 2 for the course ME414 Energy Conversion Technologies. The problem asks to calculate the output shaft power of a wind turbine installed at a height of 60 meters using the power law to estimate wind speed. It is given that the average wind speed measured 30 meters above ground is 12 m/s. The summary calculates the wind speed at 60 meters to be 13.249 m/s using the power law. It then calculates the power output of the turbine to be 3.4468 MW and with an efficiency of 62%, the output shaft power is calculated to be 1.226 MW.

Problem 1:

Calculate the output shaft power of a wind turbine installed at the height h= 60 m. The
length of the rotor wing is l= h/3m. The efficiency of the wind turbine rotor is
62%. Assume the air density is 1.18 kg/m3. Use the power law to estimate the
incoming wind speed at the given height, if the average speed measured 30 m above
the ground amounts to 12 m/s.

Solution:
1.3.4
V=12 m/s;
h=60 m;
ŋ=60% ;0.6
l=r=20;
V2=?
Pout=?
