Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics

Lesson

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics?

My MST is not using any program this semester but she told me that she was

using song of sounds program last semester.

2. How is phonics taught in your school?

The teacher starts the lesson either by singing a song about the letter and it sounds or by

playing a game such as, hidden picture game to engage the students.

3. What was the focus of the lesson?

The focus of the lesson that students will be able to recognize and write the letter

and it sound. Also, they will learn new words that start with the sound. For

example, in sound /s/ lesson the students will learn that letter /S/ sounds sssss,

they will learn how to write it and they will learn different words such as, sneak,

spoon, strawberry and soup.

4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson? If they were, select (a); if they were
not, select (b).

a. Describe the different types of active engagement

activities that the teacher used.

First, the teacher is singing songs to engage the students, which really

works to grab their attention because children gets excited whenever

they hear a song and they start to perform the movements with the

teacher to express their feelings. For example, I noticed that some of

the children perform the movements with excitement and on the other

hands some children hardly move their hands with the teacher.

Second, the teacher is using the mystery box to engage the students

which really keep them interested about the lesson when she starts to

shake the box and ask the students if they want to know what’s inside

and she starts to describe what she has inside. For example, when she

was teaching them about letter /L/ and it sound, she put lemon in the

mystery box and shake it one time. After that, she started to describe

what’s inside by saying, my colour is yellow and my taste is sour, they

squeeze me on the salad. Who I am? And the students start to predict

about what’s inside.

b. What could active engagement activities the teacher has used to

help learners b e t t e r understand the lesson?

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that

reinforced the lesson objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers,

select (a); if they did not, select (b)

a) Describe the different types of learning center activities that

the students did.

First, in the literacy area, the students read a story and using the

magnifying glass to search for the letter and draw a circle on it.

Second, in the art area, the students perform the letters using the play

dough.

b) Describe two (2) learning center activities that the teacher

could have used to help reinforce the learning outcome.
