Viva Question Solution

The document discusses various topics related to renewable energy sources including: 1. Carbon trading and its adoption by various countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 2. Factors that affect wind speed such as height and terrain. 3. Why transformers do not work with direct current (DC) and require alternating current (AC) due to the changing magnetic field needed to induce voltage. 4. Solar panels are typically rated in watts peak which specifies the maximum power output under standard test conditions of full sunlight.

Why Transformer is not working in DC
• If DC supply is given to the primary of Transformer then DC current
flows through primary winding which is constant(time invarient).
• For production of emf in any winding the current flowing through that
must be changing since e=L*(dI/dt).
• So in the given case ie, for DC input, no emf produced in primary
winding.
• So net voltage in the primary winding will be (Vin-0) more due to
which primary winding draws more current which leads to burning of
winding.
Wind power generate AC or DC ? Why ?

• Generally its AC. However it is not impossible to make the output into
DC thus it can be either AC or DC. Depending on the construction of
the turbine the output will vary. However mostly its AC since the
turbine is used to feed into the grid and generally the Grid
transmission is in AC.

• It depends on manufacturer such as Nordex wind turbines produces

AC Output while Three gorgeous turbines produces DC Output.
Transformerless (TL) inverters : Good or Bad?
• Conventional inverters are built with an internal transformer that
synchronizes the DC voltage with the AC output.
• Transformerless (TL) inverters use a computerized multi-step process
and electronic components to convert DC to high frequency AC, back
to DC, and ultimately to standard-frequency AC.
• Transformerless inverters are light, compact, and relatively
inexpensive.
• Since transformerless inverters use electronic switching rather than
mechanical switching the amount of heat and humidity produced by
standard inverters is greatly reduced.
TL inverters
• TL inverters maintain the unique ability to utilize two power point
trackers that allow installations to be treated as separate Solar PV
Systems.
• In other words with TL inverters, Solar PV Panels can be installed in
two different directions (i.e. north and west) on the same rooftop and
generate DC output at separate peak hours with optimal effects.
• Traditional inverters work through only one power point, which
means panels that are performing at lower frequencies will lower DC
output for the entire system.
Yaw Control of wind turbine
• Yaw is the angle of
rotation of the nacelle
around its vertical axis.

• Efficient yaw control is

essential to ensure
that wind turbines
always face directly
into the wind.
Pitch control of wind turbine

Effect of Band-gap
The increase in band gap of a semiconductor has drastic changes in
electrical and optical properties. For example, if a semiconductor was
transparent in infrared region, on increasing band gap it may be
transparent in visible region. Electrical conductivity may decrease on
increase in band gap.
Use of a semiconductor in solar cells also depend on band gap.
Optimum value for this purpose is 1.4 eV. It may not be showing photo
luminescence at low band gap but may show photoluminescence when
band gap becomes higher. In conclusion one can say that band gap is a
critical parameter from application point of view.
When Solar modules are connected in series
and parallel
• When wiring solar panels in parallel, the amperage (current) is
additive, but the voltage remains the same.
• If you had 4 solar panels in parallel and each was rated at 12 volts and
5 amps, the entire array would be 12 volts and 20 amps.
• When wiring solar panels in a series, the voltage is additive, but the
amperage remains the same.
• If you had 4 solar panels in a series and each was rated at 12 volts and
5 amps, the entire array would be 48 volts and 5 amps.
Why Solar Modules are rated in Watt Peak?
• . Watt peak stands for peak power. T
• his value specifies the output power achieved by a Solar module
under full solar radiation (under set Standard Test Conditions).
STC
Standard Test Conditions (STC)
• Cell temperature of 25°C
• Irradiance of 1000 W/m2
• Air mass 1.5 (AM1.5)
Efficiency of which type of solar cell is close to
50%?
• As of December 2014, the world record for solar cell efficiency at
46.0% was achieved by using multi-junction concentrator solar cells,
developed from collaboration efforts of Soitec, CEA-Leti, France
together with Fraunhofer ISE, Germany.
