Ray Kappe - Kappa Residence, Pacific Palisades California USA 1965-67. Residential
Masterpieces 26
A.D.A.Edita Tokyo Co. Ltd. 2018 ISBN 9784871405591 Acqn 28477
Pb 26x36cm 68pp 58ills 38col £30

Located in the Pacific Palisades, the Kappe Residence was designed and built in 1965-67 by
American architect and educator Ray Kappe. As Takashi Yanai writes in his essay, Kappe is "a
quiet giant within the local architectural community". The house he designed for himself and his
family follows a long tradition of forward-thinking residences that celebrate the temperate climate
and inventive spirit of Los Angeles. Yoshio Futagawa's photographs reflect its perfect example of
how a house can be so grounded in place, yet poetic in its spaces and materiality. The
challenging site, with its underground springs and steep slope, speaks to Kappe's genius. With an
interview by Thom Mayne.

JA 109 - Kengo Kuma. A LAB for Materials

Shinkenchiku-Sha Co. Ltd. 2018 ISBN 9784786902949 Acqn 28505
Pb 23x30cm 220pp 220ills 200col £35

Kengo Kuma claims that the encounter with new materials heralds the beginning of a new era.
Architecture is made with and decisively determined by physical materials. Although concrete
was the ideal material for the 20th century, the 21st is witnessing a marked departure from this
staple of the modernist tradition. Kuma is driven by the desire to recover the material, to
reconnect people and physical things, and to explore the wealth of new and different materials
waiting to be discovered. This issue is divided into sections, each dealing with a specific material
and its use in architecture: bamboo, wood, paper, earth, stone, fire (tile/glass/resin), metal, and
membrane or fibre.

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh - Cross Section. Architecture Monograph #1

Ruby Press 2018 ISBN 9783944074221 Acqn 28329
Pb 13x20cm 160pp col ills £27

The office of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is actually two individuals, Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van
Vaerenbergh, and this publication contains a cross section of their work until the present moment.
It is a diverse body of work, grounded in a broader tradition that encompasses both architecture
and the visual arts and, according to the architects, its coherence and interrelations are not
always directly evident. The book is divided into several chapters - Drawing, Cutting, Bending,
Assembling, Mirroring - and includes an interview and list of works. This thematic approach
serves as a way to categorise an oeuvre in retrospect and has been carefully and insightfully
curated by the architects.

witnessed important inaugurations like that of the Botin Centre in Santander - the first building by
Renzo Piano in Spain -, the Congress Center in Palma by Francisco Mangado, or the new
stadium of Atletico de Madrid in the old 'Peineta', by Cruz & Ortiz.
