MASTER ANSWERS
Pass Mark: 60% Possible points: 41 Time allowed: 60 Minutes
Writing must neat and be readable
NOTE: The person who marks the test must borne in mind that the answers given in
this master answer sheet are not always the only correct answers and own discretion
must be used when marking the test. It is advisable to make a short note on the learners
mark sheet at the answer that is accepted as correct on discretion. The note to briefly
sum up reason for decision.
Where an answer counts more than one point, the information
necessary in the answer for allocation of points will be
underlined.
Answer the following questions
1. Briefly explain the basic principles of a Hydro-static system. (2)
In a hydrostatic system the energy requirement is transferred to and from the
system using the pressure of the fluid. Hydro-statics is the mechanics of still
fluids.
2. Briefly explain the principles of a Hydro-dynamic system. (2)
In a hydro-dynamic system the energy requirement is transferred to and from
the system using the velocity of the fluids. Hydro-dynamics is the mechanics of
moving fluids.
3. Define pressure. (1)
Pressure is a force acting on a specific area.
4. Write down the formula used in hydraulic systems. (1)
Force = pressure x area
5. Write down the major advantage when using hydraulic systems. (1)
Mechanical advantage
6. Write down the names of the most common type of hydraulic pumps used. (3)
Vane, gear and piston pumps

7. In the drawing of a hydraulic pump, show where is the inlet, the outlet and (3)
the oil path from inlet to outlet ports.

8. Briefly explain what the following two terms mean. (2)

Pump Volume:
Pump volume is the amount of fluid that a pump can move in one minute.
Pump displacement:
Pump displacement is the amount of fluid a pump can move in one
revolution.

9. Write down what causes pressure in a hydraulic system. (1)

Resistance to flow causes pressure

10. Write down the two functions of accumulators. (2)

Act as shock absorbers
Provide a temporary supply of oil when necessary

11. In the following 3 drawings two gauges are fitted into a pipe carrying (3)
hydraulic fluid. Indicate onto the gauges in each drawing what the pressure
readings could be on each of the two gauge.

a)
Both gauges will
Indicate the same
Pressure.

1 2
b)
Gauge 1 will
indicate a higher
pressure value
than gauge 2.

12. In the drawing of a cylinder, if oil is forced into the cylinder ports at points (1)
A & B, under the same pressure, what will happen with the cylinder rod and piston:
a) The cylinder rod and piston will stand still.
b) The cylinder rod and piston will move to the left
c) The cylinder rod and piston will move to the right.

13. Write down the seven rules or steps, in sequence, which must be followed (7)
during a troubleshooting activity.
a) Determine if a problem exists.
b) Define component relationships.
c) Establish a logical checking procedure.
d) Never make assumptions, check to make certain
e) Always compare measurements with specifications.
f) Trace the problem to its origin, do not fix the symptom.
