Assignment 1

The document discusses key concepts in phase diagrams including: 1) A phase diagram shows the various phases of a system at equilibrium as temperature and pressure change. 2) The Gibbs phase rule relates the number of degrees of freedom in a closed system to its number of components and phases. 3) Melting and boiling points indicate where a substance changes phase from solid to liquid and liquid to gas, respectively, at a given pressure. 4) Triple and critical points occur at specific temperatures and pressures where three or two phases coexist.

Activity 1

1)Phase diagram
A diagram showing the various phases of a system

2) Gibbs Phase Rule

A rule stating that the number of degrees of freedom in a closed physical
system at equilibrium is equal to the number of chemical components
minus the number of phases plus the constant 2.

3)Boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor.

4)Melting point
The temperature at which a given solid will melt.

5) Triple point
The temperature and pressure at which the solid, liquid, and vapor phases
of a pure substance can coexist in equilibrium.

6)Critical point
A point on a phase diagram at which both the liquid and gas phases of a
substance have the same density, and are therefore indistinguishable.
Activity 2

a)Indicate in both diagrams the boiling point and melting point at 1 atm
Melting point 0 °C and boiling point 100 °C

b)Indicate in both diagrams the points where the substance exists in two and three
phases.

Diagram 1- A(3 phases) and B,C,D (2 phases)

Diagram 2- X(3 phases) and Y,Z (2 phases)

c) When it snows, the pressure is usually less than 1.000 atm. If the sketch of the
phase diagram is true, what should be the melting point of ice?
Higher than 0 degree.

d) On the planet X, the atmosphere pressure is 10 atm, and the normal temperature is
250 K. What is the stable phase of carbon dioxide?
Liquid
Activity 3

Sketch the phase diagram of the system NH3/N2H4 given that the two substances do not
form a compound with each other, that NH3 freezes at Tm(NH3) = −78 ◦C and N2H4
freezes at Tm(N2H4) = +2 ◦C and that a eutectic is formed when the mole fraction of N2H4
is χN2H4 = 0.07 and that the eutectic melts at Tm(eutectic) = −80 ◦C.
