Limitations of Information Systems

This document discusses several limitations of information systems: 1) Implementing advanced computer systems can lose the important human element of communication if electronic communication replaces face-to-face interaction. 2) Technological standards differ between equipment manufacturers, making it difficult to integrate various machines into a seamless computer network. 3) It takes time and effort to train all users on a new system, and initial plans are often inadequate, requiring more money to modify the system later.

Limitations of information

Limitations of information systems
Implementing advanced computer-based management information systems is
not easy.

A. A serious potential problem is that in all the enthusiasm for MIS,

electronic communication a means of a computer network and the like,
a vital human element of communication might be lost.
B. The importance of thick information is a strong argument in favor of
using electronic communication to support face-to-face
communications, not to replace it.

Technological problems
A. A major technological barrier is the lack of consistent technological
standards.
B. Different manufacturers of computer equipment may use different
technical standards.
C. These different standards make it difficult to integrate various machines
into a seamless computer network.
D. An example of this is the difficulty of transfer ring files from an Apple
personal computer to a personal computer based on the Intel/Microsoft
standard.
E. This kind of connectivity problem can occur on a larger scale within
organization-wide computer networks.

Training and knowledge requirements

Another disadvantage of computerized information systems is that it takes
time and effort to create and have all users fully trained and knowledgeable
about how to use the system correctly. A system that does not meet the
needs of the company and the information you want to store is useless. Many
companies have found that their initial plans were not adequate. This failure
forces us to spend more money to make the system what we wanted from the
beginning.

The exact data entry

Another potential disadvantage is that the information contained in a computer
system must be entered into the computer by a person. Therefore, the
accuracy of this entry is essential to ensure correct information to the correct
clients or patients. An incorrect entry could mean possible confusion at a later
date for billing or other activity that often means spending a lot of time
searching, evaluating and correcting.
