Techmath - lp3 Assessment Task Numbers

This document provides guidance for creating a learning center focused on numbers and operations for a selected grade level. It instructs the creator to choose a grade level, select a relevant math standard, research and design a hands-on activity to support the standard, find library books and websites/apps to reinforce the concept, and write a detailed teaching plan. The plan must include the standard, materials, clear steps, a book citation, and technology resource. A direction sheet for students and photos of the completed center are also required. The center aims to explore teaching strategies for numbers and operations through an engaging, student-led activity.

Assessment Task

Number and Operations Learning Center

I am going to focus on Kindergarten grade level.

Common Core Standard:

 Know number names and the count sequence.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1
Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2
Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3
Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a
count of no objects).
 Count to tell the number of objects
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.A
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only
one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.B
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the
same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.C
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5
Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or
a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many
objects.
 Compare numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of
objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.1
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.7
Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.

Teaching Plan – Jump Number Counting
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2
Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3
Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a
count of no objects).
Supplies/materials needed: computer and overhead / smart board, sticky notes, markers, pencils
Steps/directions:
Begin by showing the count to 20 music video twice. Show one time through and then have the students sing
along the second time. Link to video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azIG0kLIlgs
Discuss counting with students. Ask if they ever count and what they count.
Explain that by adding one number at a time they are counting.
Arrange the class into small groups.
Give each group a pack of sticky notes. Start with 10 and if they do well gradually add more, 5 at a time.
Ask each student to grab a sticky note and write the number one on it. Model this for the whole class.
Ask what number comes next. When a student says “two”, write the number two on another sticky note and
place it next to the first one.
Count to 10 as a class using the sticky notes and/or number line.
Have the students then label their sticky notes. Offer assistance as needed.
Once finished has the students place the sticky notes in order either on the ground or their table.
Have the students either jump, clap or snap while counting aloud.
Have the groups then continue to write number through 100 on sticky notes, place in sequential order and
practice counting numbers.
Have students complete one or multiple worksheets below to practice skills. Give more difficult sheets if
students have the skills to count higher.

Example of sticky notes:

Library book:
Ten Apples Up on Top! By Dr. Seuss
Citation: SEUSS, D. (2018). TEN APPLES UP ON TOP. S.l.: HARPERCOLLINS.
10 Black Dots by Donald Crews
Citation: Crews, D. (2010). Ten black dots. New York: HarperCollins Childrens.

Assessment Task
Number and Operations Learning Center

Target Competencies

Explore teaching strategies/techniques for numbers and operations.

Directions
1. Select a grade level. (I would recommend picking the same grade level for all of the assessment tasks
in this course.) By the end of the course, you will be creating a math center for the following areas
numbers, algebra and operations, geometry, measurement and data and statistics and probability.
Depending on the grade level, the standards will be slightly different. Use DPI Common Core Standards
for Math as a reference.

For example, I and going to focus on 3rd grade.

2. Review standards for grade level selected. Now, select a math skill related to that standard you
would like to reinforce for each of the areas.

Common Core Standard: Develop understanding of fractions as numbers. 1. Understand a fraction 1/b as
the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b
as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. 2. Understand a fraction as a number on the number line;
represent fractions on a number line diagram.

3. Next you want to research/select/create a hands-on center activity to support the standard you
selected. You can get ideas by skimming your textbook or by searching the Internet. There are many
math activities, ideas, and lessons on the Internet. A helpful site is the illuminations website that can
be found at NCTM.org. Pinterest. Practicum placements. Remember you learning center has to include
hands-on manipulatives made by you. Although you may have a worksheet to record learning, it is not a
manipulative.

In this case, I am going to research number lines and fractions. (3rd grade)

4. Research library books that reinforce standard selected.

5. Research websites/apps that students can use to learn standard selected.

6. Write a Math Teaching Plan. If you weren’t there, would a substitute know what to do? Can students
follow Your plan must include the following information:
a. name of plan
b. appropriate grade level
c. list the standard
d. list of supplies and materials that are needed
e. clear and complete steps/directions (adult)
f. a library book (children or young adult) that is appropriate for the concept being taught. (include
picture of book and APA citation)
g. technology website and/or app for each area

7. Create a direction sheet for students to follow. (Ideally, students should be able to complete with
minimal adult support)

8. Take a picture of each station/center and submit to instructor or arrange an appointment with
instructor to share center

9. Review scoring guide criteria for additional information.

10. Submit photo or learning center to instruction. Submit Teaching plan.
