Coding Theory Dr. Omar Bani Ahmad

1. This document provides information about an upcoming coding theory homework assignment, including due dates and questions for undergraduate and master's level students. 2. For undergraduates, it includes questions about decoding data transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise channel and performing iterative decoding on a product code. 3. For master's students, it includes additional questions about finding threshold voltages and likelihood ratios for data transmitted over Gaussian noise channels, and redoing the product code question considering punctured parity bits.

Coding Theory

Dr. Omar Bani Ahmad

Home work due date is  26/5/2016

Undergraduate student only solve questions 1‐2.
Master level students only solve questions 3‐4.

1. Consider the case of transmitting binary logical sysmbols a zero “0” or a one “1” over
additive white Gaussian noise channel. The logical values are represented by the pulse
levels  1 , and  1 . Let the transmitted data denoted by   , the noise by   ,
and the received signal is   :  . The probability of transmitting a “0” and “1” is
given by   0 1 0.5.
a. find the threshold decision voltage.’
b. write the likelihood ratio(LLR) test.

2. Consider the case of the case of product code (2,2,2) as in section 8.4.3, where the data
bits are represented by  , , , , and the parity bits by  , , , . Assume
the following data bit  0, 1, 1 , 1. This data is transmitted over zero
mean additive white Gaussian noise channel with variance  0.8 . Due to noise, the
received signal ( data and parity bits)
  , 0.2, .4, 0.6, 0.2, 0.5, 1.1, 0.4, 0.1 , where the notation   denotes the
noisy received data bits, and   denotes the noise received parity bits. calculate the soft
outputs for the data bits after
a. One horizontal and one vertical decoding iterations.
b. Two horizontal and two vertical decoding iterations.
c. Comment on the results in parts ( a and b).

The following questions are for the master students:
3. Consider the case of transmitting binary logical symbols a zero “0” or a one “1” over
additive white Gaussian noise channel. The logical values are represented by the pulse
levels  1 , and  1 . Let the transmitted data denoted by   , the noise by   ,
and the received signal is   :  .
a. find the threshold voltage for the following cases:
I.  1 1 0.5,    II.   1 0.60, 1 0.4.

                b. write general expression for the maximum a posteriori criteria (MAP) both cases.
                c.  write the likelihood ratio(LLR) test for both cases.
4. Redo question (2) above by considering the case of puncturing as stated in problem
8.12., where the parity bits  ,  , are not transmitted. Under this case the received
signal   , , , , , , , , , .
