Assignment 1

The document discusses bending and shear stress calculations for three beam sections (A, B, C) under a given load. It finds the reactions, shear and bending moment diagrams, and calculates the stresses in each section. Section C has the lowest bending and shear stresses of the three. Its conclusion is that Section C is the most efficient choice for the beam because it experiences lower stresses while also providing greater stability against buckling.

KNS 1063 Strength of Materials Semester 2 - 2017/2018

INTRODUCTION

As a consultant engineer, we need to perform a bending and shear stress check for each of the
given proposed sections and suggest which section is the most preferred to be used and justify
the choice choosen.

DISCUSSION

A beam has to resist basically two stresses, bending stress and shear stress.

1. Bending stress check

Bending stress increases as we move away from neutral axis which made most of the
stress is resisted by top and bottom of the beam. The middle portion located near to the
neutral axis does not have to resist much hence middle portion does not need same
thickness as top and bottom. Thus, web is made thinner than the flange which reduces the
usage of materials and costs. The maximum bending stress for Section A is 11.36 MPa,
Section B is 2.48 MPa and Section C is 0.4 MPa. By referring to Section A, the bending
stress is seen to be asymmetric following the shape of the section where the maximum
bending stress is occur at the top of the section while for Section B and C the bending
stress is balanced to the top and bottom of the sections.

2. Shear stress check

The shear stress is at maximum at the neutral axis and decreases as one moves away from
the neutral axis. To deal with it, thickness of web choose is enough to handle the
maximum stress instead of making web thickness equal to the flange width. The
maximum shear stress for Section A is 0.18 MPa, Section B is 0.10 MPa and Section C is
0.014 MPa.

Considering the above justification, Section C is an efficient option for a beam than Section A
and B where the bending stress and shear stress is lesser compared to the other sections. Also, in
Section C flange is much wider which makes it more stable in terms of sideways buckling.

CONCLUSION

The chosen section is Section C.
